BIOGRAPHY
PRACTITIONER
Herman’s practical experience includes 22 years in project environments prior to joining the University of Pretoria. During this period he held senior positions, managed small and large projects and assumed responsibility for the management of portfolios of projects.
RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS
Number of citations as per Google Scholar: 845 (April 2016)
Co-author (with John Nicholas, Loyola University, Chicago) of an international book on Project Management since 2008.
Editor (and author) of South African book on project management; more than 30 000 copies sold since 2003.
Journal papers: 36 (including 3 in the leading International Journal of PM) and contributions to 59 conferences / symposiums.
Study leader for 85 successfully-completed dissertations at master’s level.
Study leader / promoter for 3 successfully-completed PhD studies in Project Management and co-promoter or examiner on 5 others. Two PhD projects in progress.
South African NRF rating: C3.
LECTURING
Initiated a master’s programme in project management in 1999. Currently the only master’s programme on the African Continent that is accredited by the GAC (Global Accreditation Center) of the PMI (Project Management Institute).
Initiated a continuing education programme in project management (typically 20 days attendance) in 1997. To date more than 7000 people taught on 146 intakes.
Teaching project management on master’s level since 1996.
Taught more than 200 seminars on Project Management. Companies and organizations for whom in-house courses or seminars have been offered include: Eskom, Pebble-Bed Modular Reactor, Exxaro, Kumba, SABS, Arcelor Mittal, Department of Agriculture of KZN, Competition Commission, Department of Public Works North-West Province, Statistics SA, Bell Equipment, Post & Buckley International (Swaziland), SA National Parks, Habitat for Humanity, Lafarge (South Africa and Nigeria), Kwesi V3 Engineering, Group 5 Ltd, Deloitte, CSIR, Harmony Gold, Sasol Polyolefins, Anglo American and British Aerospace.
QUALIFICATIONS
Two engineering degrees, MBA and PhD in Engineering Management.
