A detailed look at how the backup system works
Automatic, transparent, and with no impact on available space
Your managed backups are taken from the VMs selected, using the OVHcloud Veeam Server. Then your management vLAN for your infrastructure transfers your data to your repository configured in RAID. This operation is managed by our teams. With this additional storage, you will have more usable space on the infrastructure.
Virtual machine requirements
You need to create a Windows-based virtual machine to enable Veeam Managed Backup on your VMware on OVHcloud infrastructure. The license cost will be included if you have a Windows Datacenter license that you ordered from OVHcloud. Otherwise, a license surcharge will be applied. To create a Windows VM, you must enable the HA and DRS services in vSphere. This virtual machine will follow the DRS affinity rules you have defined.
VMware Backup Proxy
A VMware Veeam Backup Proxy is an architecture component that sits between the backup server (VBR) and other components of the backup infrastructure.
While the backup server administers tasks, the proxy processes jobs and delivers backup traffic. It is a Linux-based server.
At OVHcloud, we deploy proxies on your hosted private cloud to manage workload backups.
By default, the first proxy will be configured with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM.
The proxy backups will be resized depending on the backup jobs and the number of virtual machines.
Backup stability
For stability reasons, we cannot make backups of virtual machines (VMs) with a volume higher than 2 TB. If you have more than 15 VMs backed up, or 10 TB of volume, you may need to create an additional proxy backup, to ensure that your backups are correctly implemented.
Autoscaling proxy
We resize the Veeam proxies based on the number of virtual machines (VMs) and VMDK disks
to ensure that your backups are properly set up.
The Veeam environment will be customized according to the number of vSphere ESXi.
