Club Membership and Assessment

To start a USA Water Polo club, you first must submit your club application (link below). During the application process, we will need to run a system check for name duplication or names that may be similar to existing clubs. We will not process duplicate or confusingly similar names and you will be asked to provide additional name options. Each club requires a club administrator with a current membership. For those club administrators that are not or will not be acting in a coach role, there is a non-competitive club administrator membership option available. For NEW clubs and members, you will need to submit the coach/admin membership application WITH the club application. We will waive the $5 paper form fee for the coaches or club administrators during new club applications.

To ensure your club is successful, please review the New Club Checklist and Market Research documents below to gain a better understand of how to optimize the water polo market around you.

All participants, athletes and coaches, will need to register individually with your club, once your application has been approved and processed. Members may have additional requirements in order to be eligible. Please refer to the Members section for more information.

COVID-19 Return To Play Information For Clubs

RETURN TO PLAY & COMPETITION GUIDELINES

March 5, 2021 - USA Water Polo Return to Competition Guidelines Get Acrobat ReaderTo enhance the safety of our athletes, referees, coaches and fans outside the pool, USA Water Polo offers the following guidelines for events moving forward in 2021. These operational changes will help promote the safe return of the sport in individual games and round robin play.

October 27, 2020 - USA Water Polo UPDATED Return to Play Guidelines Get Acrobat ReaderUSA Water Polo would like to announce the Return to the Pool Guidelines for all of our member clubs, athletes, parents, and partners to prepare them and their aquatic facilities for the restart of water polo programming in their local areas.

The Return to the Pool Guidelines are compiled based on the best and latest information from FINA, the CDC, and other relevant federal agencies. According to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s Chief Medical Officer, although the young and healthy tend to have less severe cases of COVID-19, every case of this disease is potentially life-altering or deadly.

August 7, 2020 - FINA Back to Water Guidelines after COVID Get Acrobat ReaderThese guidelines have been developed by the FINA COVID-19 Task Force to address a safe return to aquatic sport following COVID-19. They reflect information from the World Health Organization (WHO), FINA Member Federations and other international sport federations.

Given that FINA aquatic disciplines represent individual and team events, best practice for return to training and competition must be adapted accordingly. This document is designed to provide guidance only and stakeholders are reminded that the recommendations of their respective public health authorities must take precedence.

For medical doctors involved in aquatic sport, an excellent update Recommendations for return to sport during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, has been published recently in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (ref: Lollgen H, Bachl N, Papadopoulou T, et al BMJ Open Sport and Exercise Medicine 2020;6:e000858 doi:10.1136/bmjsem-2020-00858).

FINA understands that the international control of COVID-19 is proceeding at a variable rate and therefore no single set of guidelines will fit every situation.

FINA Water Polo Specific Recommendations:

For water polo players undertaking routine lane swim training, the recommendations described [in the swimming section] should be applied. The use of caps is not recommended while water polo ball skills training is undertaken, however physical distancing should be enforced. This will limit the size of squads training together.

Indicative numbers for full pool bookings are:

  • A maximum of 30 athletes per 25m pool
  • A maximum of 60 athletes per 50m pool

In addition, poolside warm-ups should be minimized with coaches maintaining physical distancing during all phases of training. The same limitations imposed upon the use of facility amenities including showers and change rooms should also be applied and spectators or non-participating players should be discouraged from attending. Water polo balls, constantly immersed in chlorinated water, present a minimal risk for infection.

June 10, 2020 - Updated Return to Play for Clubs - Camp/Clinic Sanctions Get Acrobat ReaderUSA Water Polo is opening up the "Camps & Clinics" sanction process on our website to allow clubs to sanction a camp or clinic only. If you are to request a new sanction OR update a previous sanction for a camp or clinic, you, as a club administrator, must sign an additional sanction waiver and continue to follow all local and state guidelines as it pertains to your camp or clinic. All members that participate in the sanctioned camp or clinic must be a current USAWP member and must sign the COVID-19 Return to Play waiver prior to the commencement of the activity. Please refer to the COVID-19 Sanctioned Event Waiver Get Acrobat Reader for a copy of the full waiver and requirements.

May 14, 2021 - USA Water Polo Return To Play Guidelines for Clubs. Get Acrobat Reader Although the coronavirus has been affecting different parts of the country in different ways and will continue to do so, governmental authorities in your locality may relax the social distancing/shelter in place requirement so as to permit the resumption of at least some water polo related activities. USA Water Polo members and clubs should refer to the sources of publicly available information regarding the social distancing/shelter in place requirements applicable to their locality and, at a minimum, observe those requirements.

COVID-19 Return To Play Waiver Option for Members

We strongly recommend that clubs obtain a waiver and release of any claims that may be asserted as a result of your members contracting the COVID-19 virus prior to your club resuming water polo activities. The COVID-19 Return to Play Waiver Get Acrobat Reader can be accessed for approval by your members by logging into the member's USAWP account. Obtaining a release through the USA Water Polo website will ensure that USA Water Polo has a record of the release and that you do not need to worry about paper copies being lost or destroyed.

Additional Information & Resources:

USA Water Polo does not endorse any particular program or source of information and urges our members and clubs to become as informed as possible regarding the precautions against spreading the COVID-19 virus that can be taken and to select those, in the judgment of our members and member clubs, that will best protect our members and their families under the particular circumstances under which they are contemplating a return to play.

CDC State & Local Travel Restrictions:

While every area is different, the CDC continues to recommend individuals stay home as much as possible and avoid close contact, especially if you are at higher risk of severe illness. If you must travel, follow any state and local travel restrictions currently in place. It is possible that some state and local governments may put in place travel restrictions, stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders, mandated quarantines upon arrival, or even state or county border closures while you are traveling. For more information and travel guidance, check with the state or county health department where you are, along your route, and at your planned destination. Just because there are no restrictions at the time you plan to leave does not mean there won’t be restrictions in place when you arrive.

Zoom Security - Virtual Training & Education

In light of the many "Zoom Bombings" and "Zoom Hacks" that have occurred across the country in the last few months since quarantine started and communication has moved to virtual platforms, we want to share some security best practices. While the move to online platforms for club communication and development has been incredibly positive it can be marred by infiltration of hackers with messages of hate and lewdness. We must work to set up measures to protect our athletes and families by securing meetings.

Sample Zoom Meeting Policy

  • Do not publicly share Zoom links and/or passwords. Refrain from posting links or passwords on social media platforms.
  • Password protect every meeting.
  • Enable the "waiting room" feature for all meetings and put someone in charge of taking attendance and controlling the entering and exiting of participants.
  • Require pre-registration for any meeting where the anticipated attendance is expected to be more than 20. Including collecting information such as name, email, club name, age group, etc.

Should a situation occur where a meeting is "hacked," be sure to report to the appropriate authorities, based on the nature of the hack attempt:

COVID-19 Sanction Updates

Update As Of 10/27/20

USA Water Polo would like to announce the Return to the Pool Guidelines for all of our member clubs, athletes, parents, and partners to prepare them and their aquatic facilities for the restart of water polo programming in their local areas.

Update As Of 10/21/20

At USAWP we are committed to encouraging competition where health directives indicate that play can continue safely. We understand that reserving and confirming pool time is especially difficult right now, particularly in regards to competitions with full contact. To build on that commitment, USA Water Polo is offering $35 tournament sanctions as well as additional resources for any member club able to host a safe, approved event beginning January 1, 2021 through March 31, 2021, regardless of date the sanction is submitted.

Update As Of 9/17/20

In order to encourage competitions where health directives indicate that play can continue safely, USA Water Polo is offering the following:

  • Complimentary tournament sanctions for events taking place prior to 1/1/21
  • Resources for any member club able to host a safe, approved event
  • USA Water Polo will be working with member clubs where possible to help stage clinics and competition around the country December 27-30 -- a time-slot previously reserved for the postponed Junior Olympic tournament -- to create a satellite festival of competition.
  • If you need any assistance with your proposed tournament or want help with ideas please get in touch with us at events@usawaterpolo.org

Although the coronavirus has been affecting different parts of the country in different ways and will continue to do so, governmental authorities in your locality may relax the social distancing/shelter in place requirement so as to permit the resumption of at least some water polo related activities. USA Water Polo members and clubs should refer to the sources of publicly available information regarding the social distancing/shelter in place requirements applicable to their locality and, at a minimum, observe those requirements.

International athletes, coaches, and officials participating as individuals on or with a USAWP club must be similarly recognized by a FINA organization and have a letter on file with USAWP from their home federation indicating permission to participate in USAWP sanctioned events; or purchase a USAWP membership.

All competitions must be played under official USAWP rules, as posted on line, unless modified in tournament instructions. USAWP clubs and members must be offered the opportunity to enter your event, consistent with your competitive rules, on a non-discriminatory basis.

All participating clubs must submit verified rosters through the sanctioned roster verification system for all leagues and tournaments.

Full Photo ID Check Policy can be found on the USAWP Photo ID Policy.

Event Rosters

Roster Requirements

Rosters are required from all teams participating in a USA Water Polo sanctioned, regional, or national event. Rosters require a head coach and at least 7 athletes. Coaches and designated club administrators can login to their online Member Profile to create rosters for sanctioned events and leagues. National and regional events must require the collaboration with a club administrator.

The USAWP roster system runs verification off the athletes' membership type, age, and selected division and tournament requirements. The coaches are verified to ensure membership is current and all required certifications are up-to-date and on file with the National Office. Coaches and Club Admins have the ability to manage rosters online, print and email rosters, monitor event registrations, and print membership cards and scoresheets by roster. Referees use these roster and membership cards for the sanctioned event ID check process. All of these steps help to ensure a safe playing environment for all participants.

After your roster has been submitted, you can:

  • Print copy of your roster
  • Print copies of the membership IDs of all rostered participants, athletes & coaches for quick efficient ID check in
  • Print copies of your pre-filled scoresheet to correspond with roster. These can be handed into the table prior to your game and referees can utilized these for ID checks. Print scoresheets works best from Firefox and Chrome browser windows. (sanctioned & regional events only). National event scoresheets will be provided upon checkin at the event
Create a Roster
  • Login to your membership account
  • Expand the "Event Rosters" tab on the left-hand side menu
  • Select the option based on your tournament entry; national, regional, sanctioned
  • Select "Create Roster"
  • Choose the tournament, division, and team you want to create the roster for. If you can't find the event, be sure to check if tournament starts with "2016" or "The" to be sure you do not miss the one you are looking for. Keep in mind, events not listed have not been approved through USA Water Polo.
  • Most eligible athletes from your club will pre-fill on a list to select. Please note: athletes with different affiliation or athletes that are a few years younger than the division may not be listed on the first step. Then can be added on next page.
  • Select a coach and as many athletes as possible on this first step, typing in cap number in the open field. Do not enter letters in cap number (i.e. 1A or 1B; rather list back up goalie as 13 or another field cap number. USAWP rules do not use 1A or 1B)
  • To add coaches or athletes with a different club affiliation, younger athletes, or athletes not in the original selection, use the "Add non-club player" button (Not available for Regional or National events)
  • Submit roster and add email addresses of who you want the roster emailed to.
  • Once created, roster will be saved to your membership profile so you can make changes.
