John Wasserman

Greetings shipmates and friends. Welcome to the latest installment of the Mariners Weather Log. I hope this issue finds you well.

Once again the first order of business is to say "Welcome Aboard" to 2 new members of the US VOS team. Brian Holmes has assumed the duties from Bob Webster in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area.. Ronald Williams is the new Great Lakes Port Meteorological Officer, he will be taking over for Amy Seeley. To add an additional change, the Great Lakes Port Meteorological Officer will be based in Duluth, MN. A move that will hopefully allow easier access to more of the Great Lakes fleet. Their stories can be found on page 5. Please help me in welcoming our new PMO’s aboard.

I must take this opportunity to offer an apology to the M/V Maumee. They have been an outstanding contributor to the US VOS program, and for a reason I can neither understand nor duplicate, they were not included in the previous issues ob counts. I’m so sorry for this oversight guys! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I just love reading the marine weather review section of this magazine. There is so much time and effort that goes into this portion of the magazine, I am truly grateful to all the writers who contribute. I especially like to see VOS ships referenced in these stories. It just reinforces how important weather observations are to the "forecast writing and verification process".

We just returned from the National VOS meeting held at the Calhoon Marine Engineers Beneficiary Association (MEBA) School in Easton, Maryland. I am very pleased with the outcome of the meeting and I believe it was extremely productive. We were very fortunate to have in attendance, Ms. Vickie Nadolski, NOAA’s Deputy Assistant Administrator for Weather Services and the Deputy Director of the NWS, who provided the keynote address and Mr. Mark Paese, Director of the NWS Office of Operational Systems. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank them once again for attending.

Please enjoy this issue of the Mariners Weather Log.

John
