Athletic Communications

The athletic communications office is located in the Winthrop Coliseum and is part of the external team. The athletic communications office works closely with the coaching staffs and student-athletes of the 14 NCAA Division I Intercollegiate programs. The office acts as the liaison between the athletic department and the media as well as the general public.

Coaches, student-athletes and athletic administration work closely with the communications staff in servicing the media. In addition to coordinating interviews and press conferences, the office compiles and presents accurate information to the public and media utilizing several communications platforms, including press releases and media guides.

Media Credentials
Working press credentials for all Winthrop basketball games may be requested by contacting the athletic communications office at least two days (48 hours) prior to the desired game. All credentials will be left at the pass gate located at the rear tunnel entrance of the Winthrop Coliseum and must be worn at press row and in the media interview room. Spouses and children are not allowed in the press/media areas in compliance with the working code of the United States Basketball Writers Association. Free parking is available in the rear lot (adjacent to large cooling units).
 
Press Row
Is located along court side of the Winthrop Coliseum playing floor and across from the bench area and official table. Seats will be reserved for media who are issued credentials. The press row telephone number is 803-323-2156.

Media Work Room/Services
The working media room and post-game interview area is located adjacent to the media relations office on the lower level of the Winthrop Coliseum. An outside telephone line and a fax machine are available and may be used on a first come, first-serve basis. A complete play-by-play as well as an official box score are distributed at halftime and following the game. Both head coaches and selected players will be brought to the media interview room beginning 10 minutes after the completion of the game.

Photographers
Only credentialed photographers are allowed courtside. All photographers must display their passes at all times. Attached flash photography is not allowed. However, strobe lighting attached to the catwalk area is allowed on a first come, first-serve basis.

Radio Broadcasts
Requests to broadcast any Winthrop game must be approved at least two days in advance by Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Brett Redden. One regular dial-up phone line is available at courtside for visiting radio. To request extra lines, please call Comporium Communications at 803-326-6011.

Official Interview Policy
All interviews with Winthrop University athletic administration, coaching staff, and/or student-athletes must be arranged via the athletic communications office. Please contact the person responsible for the sport in which you're requesting an interview for (see list above). All interviews with student-athletes will be arranged around their class schedules and/or practice times.
Credential Request (All Sports)
All request for media credentials and photography passes must be arranged via the Athletic Communications Office as early as possible by contacting  Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Brett Redden. All credentials will be available for pickup at the Winthrop Coliseum at the loading dock entrance. Only legitimate requests will be granted. All photographers must shoot from the baselines and positions are at the judgment of the game officials and/or athletic communications office. Press row space is limited so not all credential requests may be approved.
 
Game Day Services (All Sports)
Parking: Free parking spaces will be available on a first-come basis in the rear parking lot of the coliseum (look for large AC unit).For parking at any of our facilities, please check the map to identify public parking. See Map.
Media Service: Winthrop University uses computerized statistics. All working media will receive an official game programs (if available) and notes, halftime box scores, and a final game book.
Post-Game Interviews: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, post-game interviews are done on a Zoom or phone call.
Internet: Press row is equipped with hard line internet as well as a secured wireless network (ask Athletic Communications staff for password).
Visiting Radio: Stations wishing to broadcast games from Winthrop Coliseum must make arrangements via the athletic communications office. A dedicated ethernet line is provided for visiting radio.
Publicity Photos/Logos: Media members may request and obtain individual head-shot or action photographs of Winthrop University athletic administration, coaching staff, and/or student-athletes, Winthrop Athletics logo, and the institution’s logo via electronic files. Please contact the athletic communications office for such a request. Please submit photo credentials for contests through the athletic communications office.
