Do you mean, how do you find a counterexample to a generalism? These tend to be attempts to find better or 'superior' examples. While this may be possible the best generalisms tend to viewed as useful or significant for a reason, and therefore, have something of a reputation for being irreplaceable, if not factually, then at least they still may explain something about a particular thinker's theory, or some type of organizational connection between two or more academic areas. In some cases a generalism is actually so transcendent that it represents its own organization structure which is just as significant as several or more entire disciplines, at least if you take the content as having symbolic importance. This is one of the reasons the study of symbols is important for finding meaning in academics.
In this paper we describe two episodes of instructional interaction, in which examples are used in order to help students face their misconceptions. We introduce the notions of pivotal example and bridging example and highlight their role in creating and resolving a cognitive conflict. We suggest that the convincing power of counterexamples depends on the extent to which they are in accord with individuals' example spaces.

Acknowledging students' difficulty in generalizing in general and expressing generality in particular, we assert that the choice of examples that learners are exposed to plays a crucial role in developing their ability to generalize. We share with the readers experiences in which examples supported generalization, and elucidate the strategies that worked for us in these circumstances, presuming that similar strategies could be helpful with other students in other settings. We further share several pitfalls and call for caution in avoiding them.

This paper explores some of the ambiguities inherent in the notions of generality and genericity, drawing parallels between natural language and mathematics, and thereby obliquely attacking the entrenched view that mathematics is unambiguous. Alternative ways of construing 2N, for example, suggest approaches to some of the difficulties which students find with an algebraic representation of generality. Examples are given to show that confusion of levels is widespread throughout mathematics, but that the very confusion is a source of richness of meaning.

The products of educational research of all sorts can appropriately be seen as producing generalisations-from plain statistical generalisation from samples to populations, to grounded theory, local theory, democratic theory, and even thick descriptions and philosophical analysis. This way, descriptive, explanatory and normative accounts of single cases can also be understood as such, inasmuch they relate to general ideas, which are produced, rehearsed, supported, modified, qualified, etc., in the course of a research project. Nevertheless, they vary in their degree of explicitness, their certainty, their complexity, and the substantive dimensions they generalise on. The neglect of this characteristic in educational literature may stem from the assumption that in research, one first finds something about one or more cases or situations, and then generalises (or does not generalise) the results to other contexts. But generalisation, I argue, is there all along the process.

Paradigm incommensurability has been an issue in organisation studies research for at least the last twenty years, however it also has implications for academic teaching. A range of methods for dealing with incommensurability are critiqued along with some promising suggestions based on praxis as opposed to theory. Suggestions for academic teaching emphasise the role of mutual exploration and development of ideas. Yes Yes

Abstract: This paper offers a meta-theory concerning the relation between the general and the specific in science. This issue was recently called back to attention by Hodgson (2001). A heuristic of discovery, developed in earlier work (Nooteboom 1992, 1996, 1999b, 2000a), is used in an attempt to contribute to an understanding and a resolution of the tension between generality and specificity. That tension can be resolved if we look at general theory and specific conditions (or data, experience) not as separate entities or approaches that ...

This debate piece contains an assessment of the debate on the ‘Pretoria Agreement’ (or Cessation of Hostilities Agreement) concluded on 2 November 2022 regarding the armed conflict in Ethiopia. On the basis of a critical discussion of a paper by F. Gebresenbet and Y. Tariku (2023) published in the Spring issue of the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE), the author here contests the short-term analysis of the authors, who miss essential points of the wider context of political conflict in Ethiopia and also scholastically misrepresent some other authors in the debate.
