Geographies of the night. This intervention invites us to explore "geographies of the night" at multiple levels, in different contexts and through different approaches. If this project seeks to map out the geographies of a particular astronomical moment in the 24-hour cycle, it also aims to reflect on the emergence of a specific branch of the discipline, one with its own concepts, methods and tools. This is both a reflection "on" the night, "with" and "through" geography and an interrogation of geography from the perspective of night. In this article, we will begin by tracing the pressures which act upon the night and have made it a present-day concern, a preoccupation of public policy and an object of research in geography and across the social sciences and humanities. In a second movement, we will analyse research on the night within the discipline and trace the emergence of an interdisciplinary field of research: "night stud-ies". Finally, we will explore the possible contributions of a "night" turn for geography. From such a perspective, the night is simultaneously a matter, an infrastructure, an object, an environment, an ambiance and a generator of research.

In Holocaust fiction, narrated children act as catalysts for adult behaviour, which reinstates agency and thus responsibility in the persecuted and largely powerless adults. Since child figures help reclaim an ethical dimension for human interaction, they point to the ethical foundations of the texts. Thomas Scanlon's contractualist approach to moral philosophy in his What We Owe to Each Other (1998) is used to compare two German Holocaust novels: Bruno Apitz's successful Nackt unter Wölfen (1958) and Edgar Hilsenrath's Nacht (1964), a book with a far more protracted and conflicted reception history. Exploring the relationship between (1) the role of child figures in these books, (2) the ethical issues thus raised, and (3) the publication and reception history of the texts concerned, shows that the radically different responses to the novels are rooted in their fundamentally different ethical cores: while Apitz reassuringly uses his communist Buchenwald prisoners' heroic saving of an infant boy to demonstrate that moral motivation is rationally grounded and that the demands of rational choice do not conflict with those of morality, in Hilsenrath's dire ghetto Prokov, chances for making ethical choices such as those posed by children in need are recognized as such – but mostly not heeded in the inexorable struggle for survival, so that the ethical is equated with the irrational, and the unethical with the rational. Child figures create opportunities for adult characters to respond to moral dilemmas, which is more significant than their potential as generic, iconic figures of suffering in the service of the Holocaust ›industry‹.

Depuis l’origine, l’homme n’a eu de cesse de domestiquer la nature et d’étendre son emprise sur l’ensemble de la planète. Dans cette conquête du système monde presque achevée, la nuit urbaine, terra incognita longtemps oubliée par les édiles et les chercheurs, n’a pas encore livré tous ses  secrets.

Il y a pourtant une vie après le jour. Travail en horaires atypiques, soldes de nuit, nocturnes commerciales, illuminations, nuits blanches, transport, pollution lumineuse, nuisances sonores ou violences urbaines:  entre  insécurité et liberté, la nuit s’invite dans notre actualité. Colonisée par les activités du jour, la nuit est désormais soumise à de nouvelles pressions. La ville qui dort, la ville qui travaille et la ville qui s’amuse ne font pas toujours bon ménage. Face  à ces conflits, la nuit doit s’ouvrir à l’investigation scientifique, à la prospective et à la créativité. Ce livre nous invite à une première exploration de l’archipel nocturne, de ses acteurs, de ses limites, de ses centralités, de ses marges et de  ses rythmes. Espace de projet et dernière frontière pour l’homme du XXIe siècle: la nuit a beaucoup de choses à dire au jour.

Longtemps ignorée, la nuit fait aujourd’hui l’objet d’attentions multiples : à des fins économiques, on cherche à la conquérir dans des villes mobiles, démontables, qui vivent en continu et multiplient les événements festifs; à des fins politiques, on veut protéger ce qui mérite de l’être et que l’on risque de perdre – le ciel étoilé, les animaux, la nature, les rythmes et les saveurs – si la colonisation de la nuit, voire sa «diurnisation», se poursuit… Pour mettre la nuit en question(s) et s’interroger sur jusqu’où… ne pas? laisser se poursuivre l’expansion marchande du monde, ce colloque a croisé regards et expériences : ceux du philosophe et du psychanalyste, ceux des artistes (cinéaste, musicien, peintre,
photographe, poète…), ceux des acteurs économiques
(tourisme, transports urbains…), ceux de chercheurs.
On s’est demandé, par exemple, s’il existait un régime
nocturne de la pensée (fait de mouvement, de seuils, de
passages, d’apprentissages…) et si l’on pouvait éprouver
la nuit une qualité propre de la sensibilité humaine.
D’où la question prospective. Et si, dans la mesure où
elle révèle des expériences qui font appel à tous les
sens, la nuit pouvait éclairer d’autres manières d’être
au monde ? Et si la nuit, comme bien commun
inappropriable, pouvait enrichir le développement
durable de nouvelles dimensions, éthique et poétique? Ce livre présente les travaux du colloque de Cerisy qui
s’est tenu en juillet 2004, et propose des contributions de
