Student Stories: Abigail Zeeb

Abigain Zeeb

Major: Teacher Preparation

Abigail Zeeb came to College of DuPage because she wanted a memorable college experience without breaking the bank.

Becoming a Presidential Scholar, which includes a full-tuition scholarship, certainly helped with finances. But Zeeb also wasn’t sure what her major should be. She enrolled in a variety of classes, finding new passions – such as environmental science and sustainable farming – before deciding to pursue elementary education.

Along the way, she learned a lot about herself.

“COD helped me grow more in two years than I did in all of high school,” she said. “I figured out my major and the career path I want to take. And I also made so many new friends and relationships that I know will last after college.”

Zeeb hadn’t planned on a study abroad experience, but she found herself with a full scholarship to study in the United Kingdom through the Fulbright Commission after a coincidental encounter at an ice cream social.

“I actually heard about it through my sister and took a chance and applied,” she said. “It was a great experience. I took classes and then was able to visit museums and look at art and architecture.”

The month-long Nottingham Trent University Summer Institute focused on creativity, culture, history and heritage. Participants not only experienced the culture of the United Kingdom, but learned about each other’s home countries as well.

“A few of us shared a flat and it was nice to learn that, while from different countries, we had a lot of similar school and other experiences,” she said.

COD helped me grow more in two years than I did in all of high school.

Zeeb received her Associate in Arts degree and then graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She is currently a third grade teacher at Highlands Elementary School in Naperville.

She advises others considering College of DuPage to choose it.

“It’s worth it. You get the college experience, you get the friends, and you get to be a part of an encouraging community greater than yourself. Not only will you not be another face in the crowd, but you’ll know your professors and be a part of a classroom where everyone knows your name.”
