Department of Mathematics

About the Department

Our department’s purpose is to extend the frontiers of mathematical knowledge both in terms of expanding what mathematics is known by humanity and in terms of what humanity knows about mathematics. We do this through our teaching, student mentorship and research. Our vision is a world in which everyone has quantitative tools they need to satisfy their curiosity and thrive in modern society.

Our mission is to provide an exciting and welcoming place for CSUN’s undergraduate and graduate students to learn mathematics and contribute to the mathematical sciences. Students graduating from our program are prepared for a wide range of career paths including continued research in mathematics and other scientific fields, industrial problem solving in a wide range of contexts, and mathematics teaching in schools and colleges. Our students are capable of assuming leadership roles in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-based, multicultural society.
