What information do we collect?

Eastern Illinois University may request and collect some personal information from its website visitors and other digital platforms. For example, data may be collected if a visitor requests to be contacted, requests information about a particular program or activity, registers for a visit, requests access to a protected portion of the site, submits a form, or makes a payment.

In addition to any information collected from a visitor, our server and/or site gathers the following:

  • The duration of your visit

Other than what is described above, the university does not collect personal information about its website visitors unless they voluntarily provide that information.

How do we use this information?

Any information we collect from you may be used in one of the following ways:

  • To make an admissions decision.
  • To improve customer service. Your information helps us more effectively respond to your requests and support needs.
  • To process transactions.
  • To send emails and short message service (SMS) that provide value to our users. The email address and phone number you provide may be used to send you information and updates pertaining to your status at EIU, in addition to receiving occasional university news, and updates.

If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future emails, we include detailed unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of each transmission.

If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future sms, reply with ‘STOP’ or ‘UNSUBSCRIBE’.

How do we protect your information?

The university has implemented, in accordance with industry best practices, reasonable physical, technical, and administrative procedures to safeguard and secure information it collects online against unauthorized disclosure, loss, or misuse. The university has classified data according to its sensitivity and sets requirements for protection accordingly.

Despite the practices described above, the university cannot provide an absolute guarantee as to the security of any information transmitted through its website or digital properties.

Do we use cookies?

Permanent cookies

The university uses cookies - text files placed on visitors’ devices to measure usage patterns - to help improve both content and distribution. Visitors may opt out of the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on their browsers; if the settings are adjusted, however, a visitor may not be able to utilize the full functionality of the sites.

Transactional cookies

Except as otherwise stated in this Privacy Policy, we do not generally sell, trade, rent, or share the Personal Information that we collect with third parties, unless you ask or authorize us to do so.

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act Compliance

We are in compliance with the requirements of COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act); we do not collect any information from anyone under 13 years of age. Our website, products and services are all directed to people who are at least 13 years old or older.

Digital Advertising

The university may contract with third-party vendors to display university advertisements on websites and digital properties not controlled by the university. The university and third-party vendors with whom the university contracts may use cookies and pixel tags to serve ads based on a visitor’s prior visits to the sites and to assess the effectiveness of those ads.

In addition, the university may allow prospective students and others to provide their personal contact information to the university via these digital ad platforms. The university treats such information in accordance with this Digital Privacy Statement.

Retention of Information

The information collected through the university’s sites is retained in accordance with the its Record Retention Policy.
