He is a retired lieutenant colonel with the South Carolina Army National Guard. He holds a B.A. from the University of Chattanooga, an M.A. from Florida State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He points to his mom and to his mentor at the University of Chattanooga, Professor George Connor, as his inspirations to "keep writing." He and his wife, a retired associate dean of evening college admissions at Columbia College, enjoy travel with a special group of friends in Columbia and leisure time at family homes at Pawley's Island, South Carolina, and Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Michael's hobbies include reading, gardening, Civil War and World War II history, and baseball card collecting. Both Michael and his wife remain as active as possible in their beloved and historical Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina.view less
