About this ebook
Prevalent themes throughout Gifts from a Muse center on love of home, life and nature. Also look for philosophical entries such as "Perfection" and "Platforms". "The True Vine", "Illumination" and " A Prayer" could serve as devotionals while the three "Wishes" could be used for greeting cards.
"James Jones Philips" entails the poignant story of one of the sons of the author's great grandfather, After returning home from the Civil War, he dies three months later from a small wound that became gangrenous during his stay at a Union prison camp after Lee's surrender. Written from the perspectives of both father and son, this may be your favorite poem from this collection.
The political scene and world events aren't skirted by the author. Look for "Again?" and "A Worry".
Other favorites may include "Spellbound", "At Sixteen" (Lane"s first poem), "By Your Side", "Simply delicious, "Embracing the Day", "Sanctuary", "Platforms" and "Triumphant Requiem".
Lane Schroeder
Lane grew up in Bailey, NC and graduated from Duke in 1961. A year later, she married Fred Schroeder, a classmate, after teaching first grade in Zebulon NC. Experiencing many moves with Fred's career in the steel industry, the couple eventually lived in eight states. They are currently enjoying their retirement in the Cypress Landing community located in Chocowinity, NC. Both love living in eastern North Carolina. Their families include two daughters, their husbands, and five grandchildren. Lane joined the Pamlico Writer's Group in 2002 and still attends their bi-monthly meetings which she feels has helped improve the quality and quantity of her writings (poetry and prose). She says it's fun to hear the other members read their works and has been amazed by the talent of the membership. Gifts from a Muse is her first published book. Previously she has enjoyed sharing her poetry in her church and neighborhood newsletters. The Cypress Landing cookbook, Old Favorites, New Friends features a poem she wrote about their beautiful community. The Pamlico Sail and Power Squadron officially adopted a poem she wrote for them which recounts the history of their squadron. Delivering Meals On Wheels and serving on the pastoral care ministry of her church are two ways Lane enjoys volunteering. She plays some tennis, walks her neighborhood with Nordic walking sticks, boats and attends Duke basketball games with Fred and especially delights in visits with the grandchildren. Oh yes, she can sometime be found writing poetry on her screened porch overlooking Silas Creek and Chocowinity Bay.

Gifts from a Muse - Lane Schroeder
From The Muse
I’ve been waiting for you to settle down.
You always seem to be rushing around!
Don’t you know you need to be
Writing sweet words of poetry?
I am your muse, remember me?
Close your eyes, set your senses free.
I’d like to have you by my side
Where words with spirit never hide.
To The Muse
You’ve whispered your little verses
Inspiringly in my ear.
But I didn’t grab them fast enough;
Now they’re forever lost, I fear.
Part Two: Inspiration
And what are souls who do not bless
the gift of life each day?
A Prayer
How beautiful and splendid,
How intricate and fine!
We thank thee Holy Father
For creating every kind.
We thank thee for our presence here
That we may see and feel
This portion of thy universe
Now for us revealed.
We thank thee for thy Son on earth
Who came to share our pain,
And show us by his special light
Love is our one true gain.
Accommodation
Lord,
I’ll come when thou dost call me
Though my life is wondrous sweet
With loved ones here beside me
And new friends yet to meet.
Thy gift of time has blessed me
With the dawning of each day
And knowing that thy presence
Can help me find my way.
My memories are my heart song—
Gems strung on heavenly thread
To ever be my treasure
When earthly life I’ve shed.
Both Lord and Christ
"So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!" ACTS 2:36
Our Shepherd is also our Lamb
Reflecting the one I Am—
Word manifest through birth,
Truth’s light for all the earth,
Prophecy through him fulfilled,
True Vine for us revealed,
Love reigning o’er the Law,
Son of Man without flaw,
Grace given without cost,
Blessed Savior to the lost.
With Father and Holy Ghost dost dwell,
Our Messiah and Emanuel.
Bound
Thank heaven for the ties that bind
They warm the heart and soothe the mind,
Superseding time and space
Eternal in our Lord’s embrace.
Continuum
Punctuating red,
Contrasting dogwood white,
A cardinal tests the northeast breeze
Before he starts his flight.
Billowing canopies of pine
Against our clear blue sky
Sway to touch each other;
Their whispers heard on high.
Leaflets boast a tender green
And greet a warming sun
While birds sing much more sweetly
Now that winter’s on the run.
The coolness, the newness,
The crispness we can feel
Inspire our bent for challenge,
Waking passion, praise and zeal.
Oh Springtime, you’re a winner—
A captor of my
