About this ebook
Sometimes to save what you love, you have to kill what you love.
I never understood what that meant until I pulled the trigger and betrayed them for no other reason than because they were born that way.
I’ve done it before, but I never had a conscience about it. It was just another job well done, another paycheck towards keeping what little balance remains in my fractured life.
They trusted me, and I ran a jagged, rusty knife straight through their heart.
Maybe I deserve this…
A tale of love, betrayal, heartbreak, and redemption.

I want to forget. I wish that somehow I could just bury him deep into my mind and convince myself that I had no other choice, convince myself that I did the right thing. But I can’t. Did another choice remain? If it existed, I certainly didn’t see it.
To worry now is to waste time feeling sorry for myself. I know that, and besides, I stand a breath’s distance from my destination. By turning back, what gets accomplished? I made my decision when I decided not to stop Rhett from walking out of my house, decided not to tell him then and there. I can’t turn back now. But just because I know that doesn’t mean that what I plan to carry out becomes any easier.
While I continue to hover outside, my eyes glued to the polished, aluminum door handle, the not so harsh wind pulling at my hair, and the fresh smell of buttermilk pancakes and blueberry syrup oozing from the cracks of the diner, I only delay the inevitable.
This diner. Despite driving past it on a daily basis, and despite standing an inch away from the door, I don’t know the name. It’s a plain, congested appearing diner that sits on a busy road, with a lanky, battered sign that, in faded red letters, reads, B-ea-fast
, and stands a few yards away in the caramel brown grass.
Despite the missing letters, Breakfast
is not a business name, it’s a statement to what’s being served. I’d never support such a lazy establishment. If the owners can’t change with the times, they should get left behind, which, aside from the return customers, is apparent by the lack of cars in the parking lot. If they can’t take care of the building they serve the food in, then why would I trust them to put actual care into the food?
Fortunately, or, unfortunately, I’m not here to chow down. I might not know the true name, but when I was told to meet my associate at the diner off of Beacon Avenue, I knew where I needed to go.
Still, with what I’m about to do, there’s no location that would satisfy me.
Excuse me,
says a voice. It sounds ripe like fermented grapes, and comes from behind me.
I turn around.
A balding elderly man in a mud brown trench coat waits with patience, a warm smile on his face.
Yes?
I ask.
Are you waiting for someone, Miss?
I...I don’t know.
Why continue to stand out here under the coolness of the paternal clouds? The person I need to see already waits inside. I have no reason to wait for someone else. Do I hope that if I don’t go inside, that if I wait long enough, he’ll appear and change my mind? Or maybe I want, pray, for some magic solution that will end all of my problems?
Yeah, and maybe my parents will show up to take my sister off of my hands.
I open the heavy diner door and gesture for the man to go inside. Sorry, I lost myself in thought.
He nods and walks past, a worry free smile on his aged face. It happens to everyone, don’t worry about it.
I enter after him and look around the spacious diner. There they are.
A tall, gaunt, crow haired man in a tattered trench coat gives me a quick wave to signal his location.
With kettlebells for feet, I drag myself towards his table and collapse into the booth. A muddy plate of chocolate chip pancakes lies in front of me.
No steam, and not the slightest trace of heat from them as the chilly diner air touches against my skin. They were supposed to have been gorged down long ago.
Sam taps the rim of his busted leather watch. I like you Yulia, but you were supposed to be here thirty minutes ago.
I avoid his eyes and continue to stare at my pancakes. I’m sorry.
I saw you standing out there for a while. I considered coming to check on you. Is everything alright?
You know I get lost in thought, why would this time be any different?
You’re usually on time when we meet up.
He cocks his head and scratches at the back of his neck. I’ve known you for three years now, so I know when something’s bothering you.
I take a fork and spread the butter around the cold pancakes in random patterns. A first for everything yeah?
He shakes his head. A few minutes late I can see, but for someone who stresses the importance of being on time to show up late, it makes me wonder.
Wonder all you want, just don’t let your fantasies get in the way of the truth.
He picks up his mug, takes a sip, and calmly places it back onto the table. His eyes scan my face. Yulia, we’re friends right?
My lips contour into a small grin. Is that how you see it?
As a friend, it’s my job to help out another friend when I see they need the help.
A quiet snicker escapes
