      The night was cold and wretched. The snow lay deep around the castle grounds. A gibbous moon shone brightly, making the snow glisten white. As usual, the duke had risen from his night time bed and, as usual, Petr the young servant boy was in attendance.

      Petr wondered where they would visit. It was a nightly ritual that saw the duke visit the poor and ill of his duchy. Even after the day’s Feast celebrating the birth of Christ, when all the other nobles were warm in their beds with their bellies full of food and wine, the young duke was up.

      The old duke had died when the young duke was only a boy. Too young to rule, others had done so on his behalf. On coming of age at eighteen, he had taken control of the government. Now, barely out of his teens, the young duke ruled with kindness and generosity.

      Having thrown the shutters back, the duke was looking out the window. Petr shivered as the chill crept into the room and began to curl its icy fingers around him.

      Petr, come here, the duke beckoned.

      Yes, Your Grace, Petr answered, rushing to the duke’s side.

      The duke pointed out the window. The old man gathering firewood.

      Petr leaned past the duke and looked out the window. A dark figure in the snow was dragging a sled behind him. Every now and then he stopped, collecting sticks and putting them on his sled.

      I see him, Petr answered.

      Do you know him?

      Petr looked carefully, straining his eyes to see the man’s face, though it was covered in shadow under the hood of his robe. A sudden wind blew the hood up and revealed the man’s face before flopping down to cover him in shadow again.

      Yes, Your Grace. He lives near the edge of the forest. I believe his name is Edvard.

      The churches and prisons can do without us tonight, Petr. Bring me wine and meat from our day’s feast. Bring me logs from the kitchen fireplace. We will visit with our friend Edvard this fine night.

      Yes, Your Grace.

      Petr eased away from the window. He bowed to the duke, turned and strode from the bedchamber.

      Petr walked the cold corridors of the castle to the kitchen. The great room was still full of warmth from the previous day’s cooking, and he shivered as the burst of heat hit him.

      He grabbed the rope handle of the wood-carrying sled and dragged it out from behind the fireplace. He began to stack it neatly with logs, leaving a hole in the centre to put the foodstuffs and drink. He took meat from the larder. Wrapped in a cloth, its juices stained the cloth and soaked
