    The Talking House

    Diane Finlay

Hey have you got a minute? I have to tell someone otherwise I will absolutely explode and then there will be bits of Hannah McCormack splattered all over the place. And that would be yucky. I really need you to listen to me, please, so none of that happens.

There is a talking house on my street. This is for real. I am not making it up. Every time I go past the house; which is twice a day, because I’m in grade two – Miss Jamieson’s class to be exact – the house at the end of the row talks to me. It says, Hello.

The thing is, I know if I say anything to Mum, she’ll just say, Hannah McCormack, you and your imagination. If I say anything to Miss Jamieson, she’ll tell me to write a story about it and if I say anything to Ginny, my best friend, she’ll just crack up.

Great! You’re still listening to me – thank you.

Anyway, back to the beginning. The talking house is on my way to school. It’s at the top of the hill and on the corner at the end of the row, but it’s different to all the other houses. It has a front door in the middle and windows on each side. All the rest have a door at one side and only one window.

The first time I walked past, I thought the house was smiling at me – it made me feel happy. I’m always by myself when I walk because our house is so close to my school. Five hundred and ninety six steps away; I know because I counted. Everyone else comes in on the bus or gets dropped off at the gate.

No one else hears the house talk so there are no witnesses. Why would anyone believe me? I’ve thought about answering but what if the house starts asking me questions. I mean, I know I’m not supposed to talk to strangers but no one has ever said anything about talking to houses.
