About this ebook

This is an in-depth study into the Holy Spirit, who is not a mere force. He is not energy. The Holy Spirit is a person and part of the Trinity along with the Father and the Son. God is Sovereign, and just so God wills and moves according to His will. Just so, the Spirit of the Lord moves and acts never out of His own accord, but always follows the leading of the Father. So the Spirit is interdependent, as there is a mutual dependency within the Trinity. The work of the Spirit is far greater in scope than merely the spiritual gifts, for the Spirit of the Lord leads us in our calling on the narrow path to the glory of the Lord. It is of utmost necessity for the Church to be one that is utterly and completely Spirit-filled, and not led by the flesh. For only in the Spirit can we fulfil the Great Commission, be true disciples and walk in His truth, His way and His life.

Forming a positive vision of our endeavours

EPHESIANS 4 (NEW INTERNATIONAL Version): 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

There is told a story of three stone masons, which speaks of having vision and having a positive attitude. The story goes as follows:

Three stone masons in the middle ages were hard at work when a visitor came along and asked them what they were doing.

The first stone mason was hard at work, sweat beading his brow. I am cutting this stone, he grumbled.

The second stone mason, though less distraught, responded with a deep sigh, I’m building this parapet.."

The third stone mason, replied with a radiant face, I am building a beautiful cathedral that will glorify God for centuries to come.

The same work, three different visions. One was concerned with the here and now; the next with the near future; and the last was concerned with eternity.

And so, we as God’s children are also all stone masons, building His Kingdom, and with every deed, with every effort, with every word and with every proclamation of the Good News we are building this massive cathedral, more commonly known as the spiritual New Jerusalem.

Yet, how easy it won’t be for us to fall into that trap of having a lack of vision regarding God’s bigger picture, the role that we play and the difference we make, even though it may seem small, yet it contributes to the end time magnificent product.

The Lord has a calling on each and every person, for we have been called to be ambassadors of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:20) and we have all been called into the priesthood of the Kingdom, having to make disciples and to preach the Good News (Matthew 28:16-20). 1 Peter 2: 4 You come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

It is, however, true that in God’s Sovereign wisdom to each He has granted certain gifts, talents and abilities in order that together with the other labourers His Kingdom will be established on earth.

And surely, there is no task more weightier than another, and there is no labourer‘s task which is of greater value than another. For it says in 1 Corinthians 12: 12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body... 14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

As with the case of the stone masons, their work was to cut stone, yet the cathedral would be incomplete without their effort and labour. Unfortunately, only one stone mason could see that the work they were doing, even though laborious and back aching played a significant role in the end product. This third mason had a positive attitude because he realised he was not merely cutting stone but was actually an intricate part of the magnificent structure.

True, some would see their task being not so flashy and glamorous, as compared to someone assigned to design to cathedral, or those who will decorate it or even those who will be part of its daily functions. But from the stone mason to the architect to the designer to the decorator to the priests of the cathedral, everyone has a part to play.

And so, in this day, let us be reminded of these three stone cutters and let us keep in mind that we are labouring not to build just a cathedral, but we are called to build the greatest of all cities – the Kingdom of God that will stand forever into eternity.

So, proverbially, some they may feel they are only called to cut stone, some may feel they are called to only sow the curtains of the cathedral and some may feel they are called to design but a small part of the interior, but let us keep in mind every task and every effort is of key importance. For it is written in 1 Corinthians 1:30-31: It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.

Let us then strive to build this Kingdom of God in the strength of His Spirit, in His Wisdom and in Truth, with our vision on His City and let us labour to His glory with diligence, with passion, with love, with hope and with faith.

    Taking hold of vision

AT THE MOMENT OF SPIRITUAL surrender unto God, visibility of physical sight and physical senses surrenders unto eternal and everlasting spiritual vision for unto that moment the eyes of faith open and the sight of flesh ceases in perception and knowledge and understanding, and by that awakening and rebirth of vision at the expense of the natural and temporary visibility of reality, our journey unto the spiritual begins and there is a deeper blossoming of the reality of the truth settled in the senses of the Spirit.

And so we walk by faith and not by sight.... and so we surrender so that what is visible is not the determining factor of our reality and truth for visibility is the lingering perception of thought and opinion, however, the abandoned journey of true spiritual vision is the interpretation and the foresight and the understanding of the eternal, which is the past and present and future, by which all things are upheld and by which all things function and by which all things operate.

And so Jesus at the point of surrendering, when He said He only does what He sees His Father does and He only speaks what His Father speaks, moved from the realm of the visible Israel - one strangled by temporary plight and misery - unto a realm of eternal spiritual Israel freed by the eternal Covenant and the eternal Promise of Redemption and Salvation.

For truly, visibility determines texture and colour and height and depth of object and matter, being scientific and abstract in limitation, but such existence is temporary and determined by our sight, yet truly, vision determines spiritual dimensions and truths unbeknownst to sight and visible comprehension. How we need to surrender unto the moment of majestic bliss and hopeful delight so that the Spirit raises us up into the vision of the glory and eternal comprehension of truth so that the reality of God's Word and Existence is our determining reality now and forever ... and so we behold, we take hold and are taken hold of by the vision of Glory and Truth and of Love that is settled in the existence of Trinity Divine.

Paul on the road to Damascus had such a reality and such a moment of surrender, for at that moment when the light shone upon him, his perception and reality of truth settled in the physical visibility of circumstance and situation that led to the persecution of the Christians who were beholding the truth of the Spirit, was shattered and was shaken. Ah, how glorious and how precious when at that moment of surrender Paul no longer saw a truth and no longer discerned a reality that was false and distorted, but he now saw by spiritual vision and clarity of spiritual insight that God is Lord of Jew and Gentile.

Acts 9 (New International Version, ©2010): 1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? 5 Who are you, Lord? Saul asked. I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting, he replied. 6 Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do. 7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, Ananias! Yes, Lord, he answered. 11 The Lord told him, Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight. 13 Lord, Ananias answered, I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name. 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name. 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

And so we comprehend the words of Jesus when He said: John 3: 3 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. Glory unto the Lord, for there is truly greater sight of spiritual vision that determines God’s eternal reality and truth settled not in the natural or physical, but in the supernatural. And it is by such reality and truth that we as His children function and operate, for our reality and truth is not settled in circumstance and situation that so blinded the Israelites in the wilderness, but it is settled in God’s Word, in His Spirit and in Heaven.

Ah, how we all need a moment of true surrender unto God to alleviate the blindness of physical, natural and temporary sight of existence and reality, so that we may truly live in God’s higher existence and reality, and such a true blissful state of governance is founded upon love.

For only the blind failed to see the reality and the truth of Jesus’ moment of surrender on the cross, for love blossomed and love triumphed to allow all who believe to see beyond the veil, to see beyond the natural and to see beyond the sacrifice by the vision of Spirit. Glory unto Jesus, for by Blood, by Spirit and by Water that all testify to the sacrifice of the cross, we now see the truth and weightiness of the Sacrifice that sealed the Covenant, we behold the journey beyond the veil into the Holy of Holies and we perceive the glorious delight of eternal reward. Isaiah 11: The Branch from Jesse: 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.

Glory, for when our hope and truth rests upon God and is settled in Spirit and in heaven, then we shall see as the Lord sees regarding all things and matter and circumstance, for then there shall be no fear of anxiety, for what we shall see is the height and depth and width of God’s love and the immeasurable divine might of the Spirit to lead us higher in glory and hope. We shall not walk by sight but by faith, for by faith we overcome, for by faith we are victorious and by faith we comprehend, we discern and understand that God is Lord.

2 Corinthians 3: 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

    Strategically striving towards vision

WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND that when it comes to our dealings with the Lord on a spiritual level, and when it comes to our service and our ministry, then we are dealing with vision and perception.

All of us have a certain mandate which is loosely translated as our calling or purpose on earth. This mandate is ordained, sealed, and masterminded by the Lord Almighty, and so we are called to walk in the mandate as ordained for us by the Lord, and not fashioned by the imagination and by the flesh of man.

However, with a mandate comes a vision – a vision is fashioned by the birthing inside of us through divine insight and understanding in order for us to grasp the reality of our God-ordained mandate and how to fulfil it. Without vision, we will not know how to take hold of our mandate, and we will therefore be left in the dark as we struggle to take hold of the calling that has been placed upon us like a mantle.

However, we need to pursue this vision and our mandate in accordance with true divine and supernatural perception which is not hollow, shallow, void of depth or void of heavenly substance.

When it comes to the fulfilment of vision in accordance to the divine and not worldly perception, we then require divine strategic guidance by the true Counsellor of Heaven so that we may be true spiritual offerings but also true practical resources of light and life and substance unto a broken world.

What is perception? Perception is the ability to perceive, in other words, being consciously aware of the state of things or the existence of such things and how such things operate and function within a given context or circumstances or situation.

Perception comes down to the reality and truth of such a situation or circumstance, which in turn affects the way we think about it, the way we regard it and the way we operate and function in accordance with our reality and truth.

Problem is, when it comes to our mandate and vision, we are dealing here with reality and truth as determined by God and that supersedes the natural. Our problem is that we ascertain reality and truth and we consider the functionality of a situation or circumstance according to our upbringing, experiences, culture, tradition and even our religious understanding. In other words, our perception remains very subjective according to the one who is exercising the perception.

This is then where the Holy Spirit steps in. We are not called to perceive from a position of the Self, based on our religious and life experience, but to perceive in the Spirit who perceives and understands the true reality and truth of a circumstance or situation.

Empiricism is a philosophy which deals with reality through the senses. Its underlying philosophy is that one can only perceive your reality through what you see, feel, taste, touch and smell. In other words, our reality is determined through the flesh and through the experiences of the soul, and not the spirit.

God is, however, calling for us to perceive not in the flesh or the soul, but in the Spirit, but in order to do this; we need to walk in faith. This is why we walk not according to sight [empiricism] but according to faith.  We cannot run with our mandate in accordance with our vision if our perception is tied to the Self instead of God determining what the reality and truth are.
