      through the eyes of a child

      Richard woke up and quickly climbed down the ladder of the shared bunk bed. The seven-year-old just had to wake up his twin sister and share his happy thoughts. He softly shook Rachel awake, she opened her eyes, and the children smiled at each other.

      Today was Saturday, Papa’s day off from his job.

      Mornings were Richard and Rachel’s favorite time of the day, especially the weekends, and because Papa could join them in all their activities.

      Smelling the strong aroma of coffee, Rachel quickly pushed off her comforter while getting out of bed and together the twins danced out of their room, down the hall toward the kitchen, to greet Mama and Papa.

      Mama and Papa were sitting at the kitchen table, each with a steaming mug of coffee, talking to each other in low voices. The frisky children approached their parents, excited and full of smiles. Everybody exchanged big ol’ bear hugs.

      Rachel and Richard eventually sat down at their own places at the table. Mama served them both a cup of delicious cocoa made with rich, fresh goat milk. Sitting quietly they sipped on their sweet beverage. Everybody gazed outside, through the large open window. From this view they could see the cows and the goats grazing on the grass in the fenced pasture and every so often they could hear the rooster crow over by the chicken coop. And if they made no sound, held perfectly still, and really listened closely they could even hear the ducks quacking out by their water pond. All the farm animals were enjoying the wonderful sunny day.

      It was finally springtime. The deep winter snow had melted weeks
