"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal assistance ..." Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. § 1681.

Governors State University does not discriminate on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, or gender expression or identity; and prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity that it operates, as required by state and federal law (including Title IX and its regulations), including in admissions and employment.  GovState’s complete Notice of Nondiscrimination is available HERE

GovState is committed to maintaining a community in which students, faculty, and staff can work and learn together in an atmosphere free of all forms of unlawful sex discrimination and retaliation. Such misconduct violates the dignity of the individual and the integrity of GovState as an institution of higher learning and, thus, will not be tolerated.

The Comprehensive Nondiscrimination Policy 


In accordance with its obligations under Title IX and state law, GovState has adopted and implements a comprehensive nondiscrimination policy that lays out the foundations of GovState’s Title IX compliance program.

Policy 78 prohibits all forms of sex discrimination, including all discrimination: on the basis of an individual’s actual or perceived sex, gender identity or expression, and/or sexual orientation; on the basis of sex stereotypes and sex characteristics; and on the basis of pregnancy or related conditions.  Policy 78 also prohibits all forms of sex-based harassment, including: quid pro quo harassment; hostile environment harassment; sexual violence (such as sexual assault); dating/domestic violence; and stalking.

The Title IX Procedures 


GovState has issued a series of Administrative Procedures for the implementation of the Title IX compliance program laid out in Policy 78.

The Title IX Reporting Procedures describe the various respective rights, obligations, and options students, employees, and others at GovState have to report information about conduct that reasonably may constitute sex discrimination or retaliation under Title IX.

The Title IX Response Procedures describe how GovState responds upon gaining knowledge of possible sex discrimination or retaliation; addresses any sex discrimination that may occur in its programs or activities or on its property; and ensures equal access to programs and activities for students experiencing pregnancy or related conditions.
