The NFL and a record-shattering boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul helped Netflix add 19 million subscribers in its fourth quarter, as the streaming giant further cemented its place as the leader in the space. Netflix said on Jan. 21 it has 302 million subscribers, though going forward Wall Street will have to make its own guesses around sub growth, with the company set to stop providing quarterly updates. Snapshot

Tracking America

If early tracking is right, the Marvel Studios feature should open to at least $90 million-plus over the combined Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend, one of the top showings ever for the holiday. That’s the same weekend the first Deadpool opened, as well as the first Black Panther. This year’s first all-audience event pic opens on Feb. 14, or Valentine’s Day. Full story.

College Football Finale Declines

The title match of the first 12-team College Football Playoff drew a big audience — just not as big as several other years. Ohio State’s victory over Notre Dame averaged 22.1 million viewers across ESPN’s channels, dominating the Jan. 20 primetime ratings. But the later date for the game — the championship usually fell on the second Monday of January in the four-team playoff era — may have pushed the audience down some compared to last year; the audience fell by about 12 percent (from 25.05 million). Still, the game drew the largest non-NFL primetime audience on TV in the past year.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video Soar Over Holidays

The holiday season brought big gifts to several streaming platforms, with YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video all hitting or tying their best mark ever in Nielsen‘s Jan. 21 monthly snapshot of TV use. The ratings service’s December Gauge rankings — which, due to a quirk of how Nielsen collects its data, also includes the last week of November — show streaming services commanding an all-time high of 43.3 percent of all TV viewing in the United States.
