The alien invasion comedy Hillbillies vs. Alien Chickens has taken home the top prize in this year’s Horror2Comic Contest.

The script from Nicholas Tana is described as a twist on the alien invasion genre, and centers on a vegan hillbilly who must team with a government agent to combat invading alien chickens.

Winning scripts in the Horror2Comic contest are made into comic books, and in turn are put into development as a feature or a TV show via Motor Content, the company whose credits include History’s Knightfall and the Michael Keaton feature The Founder. The contest has its origins as an offshoot of Script2Comic, which focuses on all genres, not just horror.

All six episodes of the fourth season of the anthology series Creepshow, which is a continuation of the franchise George A. Now Variety reports that Engler has teamed up with The Cartel, the production company behind Shudder’s Creepshow series, to launch Shiver Studios, “a new genre company with plans to make and finance up to 10 horror films a year”!

Variety explains that the Los Angeles-based studio will focus on a theatrical-first approach, looking to ride the recent trend of indie horror hits. Lifetime has announced the airdate for “Reba McEntire’s The Hammer,” which marks Lifetime’s second collaboration with the country music singer following 2021’s “Reba McEntire’s Christmas in Tune.”

Inspired by the life of traveling circuit judge Kim Wanker, the original film follows Kim Wheeler (McEntire), a lawyer who is appointed Judge of the 5th District of Nevada and becomes one of the few traveling judges left in America. “The Hammer” reunites McEntire with her “Reba” co-star Melissa Peterman and stars Kay Shioma Metchie and Rex Linn.

Tubi continues to expand its adult animated programming, giving a green light to Breaking Bear, an adult animated comedy series from The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia director Julien Nitzberg, Creepshow producer Cartel Entertainment, and Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge’s To The Stars Media (Monsters of California).

Created by Nitzberg, Breaking Bear parodies the tropes of mobster dramas, comically combining elements of Yogi Bear with The Sopranos. Following the 2021 holiday film “Reba McEntire’s Christmas in Tune,” Lifetime and the country music superstar are teaming up again for a new original movie: “Reba McEntire’s The Hammer,” inspired by the life of traveling circuit judge Kim Wanker.

“The Hammer” will follow Kim Wheeler (McEntire), an “outspoken, firecracker lawyer” who is appointed Judge of the 5th District of Nevada and is one of the few traveling judges left in America. Tubi has announced the casting and director for “Crushed,” a coming-of-age comedy set to premiere this April on Fox Entertainment’s ad-supported streaming service.

“Crushed” follows Kate (Bebe Wood), a romantic high schooler who has a huge crush on classmate Jason (Nicholas Alexander Chavez). But, as she unsuccessfully tries to get together with Jason during their senior class trip, things spiral out of control.

In addition to Wood and Chavez, “Crushed” also stars Brenna D’Amico (“Descendants: Wicked World”), Valerie Azlynn (“Sullivan & Son”), Kylee Russell (“Zombies: Addison’s Monster Mystery”), Lisa Yamada (“All of Us Are Dead”), Meg Wright (“Jeepers Creepers III”) and Bailey Stender (“Pop Music High”).

“Kin,” the Irish gang drama streaming on AMC Plus, is returning for its second season. The series centers the Kinsellas, a crime family that wars with and ultimately kills powerful drug kingpin Eamon Cunningham (Ciarán Hinds). Season 2 will begin production this summer and follow the Kinsellas as they become the top dogs in Dublin but must deal with the consequences of Cunningham’s death. Exclusive: Teresa Hsiao, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, has signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television to develop comedy and animation for cable streaming platforms via her Red 136 Productions.

This marks a return to Sony for Hsiao who started her career in TV development at the studio six years ago with a comedy project that sold to ABC.

“We have always loved Teresa’s sensibility and truly singular comic voice since we developed with her early in her great career,” said Glenn Adilman, EVP of Comedy Development for Sony Pictures Television. “Since then, we’ve been fans of everything she’s worked on, including our own Black Monday, and knew we had to double down on our relationship with her. A series adaptation of Tj Middleton’s quirky English novel Cliffhanger is in the works at Fox.

The network is developing a one-hour drama series adaptation of the book, which was first published in 2008, with Melissa Byer and Treena Hancock, who have worked as co-exec producers on series including CSI, The Gifted and Chicago Med.

The book follows Al Greenwood, a maverick taxi driver, who pootles around the British countryside in Dorset and decides to kill his wife.

However, the series will gender swap the main character and will follow the exploits of rideshare driver Audrey Greenwood, who emerges from the pandemic with a startling realization: she never wants to see her husband Al’s face again.

Exclusive: Lifetime has rounded out cast for both installments of Toni Braxton’s Fallen Angels Murder Club, and Angie Harmon’s Barstow (working title) movies. The movies fall under previously signed deals with Braxton and Harmon, in which they will star in and executive produce multiple films for Lifetime.

Eddie Cibrian has joined the first installment of Braxton’s Fallen Angels, while Kelly Hu joins the cast of the second film. Both films are based on the Hollis Morgan mystery book series by author R. Franklin James.

Cibrian stars as Avery Mitchell, Hollis Morgan’s (Braxton) charismatic boss, while Hu will make her debut in the second installment as the mysterious Joelle. Both productions have started filming and will premiere in 2022. Additionally, Harmon’s Barstow (working title) movies has added Kristoffer Polaha as Elliot, a mysterious stranger with a troubling past.

In the first installment of Fallen Angels Murder Club (wt), members of the Club must have two things in common – a love for books and have a criminal record. Hollis Morgan (Braxton) meets both requirements. Left holding the bag in an insurance fraud scheme concocted by her ex-husband, Hollis served her time and now hopes the court will pardon her conviction so she can return to law school and fulfill her dream of becoming a lawyer. But when a member of her book club is murdered in a scene straight out of the previous night’s novel, Hollis once again becomes the subject of police scrutiny. Refusing to get stuck with another bad rap, Hollis sets out to investigate her fellow club members and after a second book-inspired murder, she races to identify the killer before she becomes the next victim.

Exclusive: Production and management company The Cartel has entered into an agreement with New York Times bestselling author Brenda Jackson and writer-producer Bobby Smith Jr to option and acquire over 25 of the author’s novels. Jackson’s canon will be adapted for film and TV.

Among Jackson’s best-known works included in the deal are The Catalina Cove series of books, The Perfect series, The Playa’s series, The Big Girl series, The Madaris’ Family, as well as Men of Action books.
