The only major film role actress Robin Curtis had before 1984's "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" was playing a minor role in John Irvin's 1981 horror film "Ghost Story." By a weird coincidence, "Ghost Story" also featured actress Alice Krige, who would play a prominent role in 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact." Curtis also appeared in an episode of "Knight Rider" in 1983, and in the salacious TV movies "In Love With an Older Woman" (can a 29-year-old possibly love a 43-year-old?) and "First Affair" (Oh no! I'm in love with my professor!).
So by "The Search for Spock," Curtis was already used to being on set and acting in high-profile studio productions. "Star Trek," however, was the largest project she had worked on yet. She played the role of Saavik, taking over for Kirstie Alley in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Saavik is a Vulcan, and...

In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "In the Flesh" the U.S.S. Voyager encounters a mysterious space station that contains a perfect simulation of Starfleet Academy back on Earth. The simulation contains familiar faces from Starfleet Academy, including the friendly groundskeeper Boothby (Ray Walston). Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is suspicious of the simulation, and some investigation finds that the "humans" she encounters inside are actually genetically altered members of Species 8472, vicious aliens from an alternate dimension full of fluid. Species 8472 is convinced that humans intend to invade their dimension and take over, and they are using simulations to better know a potential enemy.
Armed with this knowledge, Janeway enters into negotiations with Species 8472, hoping to end the hostilities between them and the Voyager. The negotiations are held with Boothby, a woman named Commander Valerie Archer (Kate Vernon), and the grumpy Admiral Bullock (Tucker Smallwood).

You know what the most important thing about a good TV show is? The ability to watch it from start to finish. And that doesn't always happen – just ask fans of The Santa Clarita Diet, The Great, or The Oa.
Sci-fi fans on Reddit have compiled their list of shows that were killed off too soon.
1.Firefly, 2002
In 2002, one of the biggest cancellations in television history occurred: Fox canceled Joss Whedon's Firefly. It's hard to describe the shock and anger of the fan community.
The fans of the series tried to contact the network executives who had made such an awful decision with all the means at their disposal: petitions, letters, phone calls, and pickets at the studio doors.
It's no wonder that more than twenty years later, Firefly remains the biggest wound in the hearts of sci-fi fans.
2. Almost Human, 2013-2014

Regulars on the Farscape subreddit will already know that Owen Davies has completed his epic AI Remaster Project, releasing all 88 episodes – plus the two-part Peacekeeper Wars miniseries – to YouTube in 4K.
Upscaling the existing Farscape 15th Anniversary Blu-ray footage was undertaken using the commercially available Topaz Video AI software. However, Davies – who works as a Freelance digital designer/multimedia developer – balks at referring to it as a mere “upscale.” A lot of highly technical preparation is done on the Blu-ray footage, such as sharpening the image, correcting the contrast, and retouching the color grading to take it with a breath of a full remaster.
All in all, the process has taken him four to five hours per episode and I challenge you to find fault with the results in this side-by-side comparison video:

David Nutter, who has directed key episodes – many of them successful pilots – of a stunning number of popular TV shows from “The X Files” to the infamous “Game of Thrones” Red Wedding shocker, took the stand Thursday in the rape trial of Harvey Weinstein to support the testimony of a Jane Doe witness and friend, fulfilling an oath he made to her years ago.
Nutter followed the testimony of “Nm,” a model and actress from Norway who testified Wednesday that she had met Weinstein only a few times before when one night, after the 2008 BAFTAs in London, she awoke to the Miramax mogul banging on her hotel room door. She said he was disheveled and agitated as he shoved his way in, pushed her down on the bed and raped her – then assaulted her again upon subsequent meetings.

Turnstile returned to late-night TV Monday, performing a high-energy rendition of “Blackout” on The Tonight Show. The multi-segmented song appears on the Baltimore-based band’s latest album, Glow On, which was released to critical acclaim last August.
The performance finds the hardcore punk outfit deftly moving between the track’s unique blend of musical genres — hardcore punk, sludge metal, dance punk and arena rock — with vocalist Brady Ebert even providing additional percussion accompaniment during one portion of the song.

Three mystery celebrities hit the stage on Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer.” Prince, Queen Cobra and Space Bunny all sang their hearts out in hopes of winning Round 3 but it was Team Good’s royal toad that ruled the day. Team Cuddly’s Space Bunny finished in third place for Group C following a fun performance of “Now That We Found Love” by Heavy D & the Boyz ft. Aaron Hall and was unmasked to reveal Grammy-winning entertainer Shaggy.
“What took y’all so long?” Shaggy screamed out to the panelists during his unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon. “Ken, I was just on your show!” The performer admitted to disguising is recognizable tone with each performance. “I can’t use my original singing voice, walking around like, ‘Mr. Boombastic.’ One of the things about being a performer is it’s really about your facial expressions. (Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
It appears to be ’90s week on “The Masked Singer.” During the Round 3 Finals on Wednesday, both Space Bunny and Queen Cobras were eliminated from the competition.
Queen Cobras was revealed to be R&b group En Vogue, while Space Bunny was none other than Shaggy. The judges were on a roll this week, managing to guess the correct identities for each before they were unmasked.
Shaggy was the first to go home after his performance of “Now That We Found Love.” Before he was revealed, judge Robin Thicke managed to correctly guess that he was behind the cuddly astronaut costume. In all honesty, the reggae singer told TheWrap he wasn’t too surprised that the judges were able to figure out his identity — and he actually expected it sooner.

John Sturges’ orbital jeopardy thriller does everything right: the story is taken seriously, the actors seem committed and the special effects aren’t bad. Yet it’s more interesting for what doesn’t work than what does. As one of the first Sci-fi pictures in the wake of 2001 it wasn’t well received despite being technically astute. Did NASA’s race to the Moon put an end to fanciful space Sci-fi? Gregory Peck, Gene Hackman, Lee Grant and some ex- TV actors do their best, but producer Mike Frankovich’s space saga just sits there. It looks great in its first Blu-ray release: images of the actual Apollo 11 launch are breathtaking.

Elon Musk’s successful takeover bid for Twitter has raised concerns about his plans for the social media platform, because of his political views. Historically those views have teetered left and right, but tend to gravitate towards libertarian. His anti-union stance as CEO of electric vehicle maker Tesla has displeased liberals, even if they constitute his best automotive customers.
Objections to The Boring Company, his venture that proposes to build underground transportation networks beneath cities, fall not on ideological grounds but practical ones: some civil engineers just call it pie in the sky.
But there is one skyward thrust of Musk’s sci-tech empire that attracts almost universal praise – the aerospace enterprise SpaceX. The Netflix documentary Return to Space, directed by Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, chronicles the company’s development of a recyclable rocket and its collaboration with NASA to get this country back into human space exploration.

Two feature films from Ukraine will this month be given special screenings in Tokyo, Japan, as part of a fund- and awareness-raising initiative about Russia’s war in Europe.
Both films “Atlantis” and “Reflection” were made by director Valentyn Vasyarovych. They played at the Venice film festival but have not been licensed to Japan or released commercially there.
However, under the banner of the Ukrainian Filmmaker Support Screening Association, former Tokyo International Film Festival programmer Yatabe Yoshi, has arranged special permission for the benefit screenings to go ahead. They take place March 29-31,2022 at the Euro Space and Euro Live venues.
Tickets will be sold via the Motion Gallery crowd funding platform, with profits beyond the cost of prints and sub-titling forwarded to the production companies and Ukrainian film support organizations.
” ‘Atlantis’ is a realistic parable that portrays the Ukraine’s conflict with Russia as a story of the dystopian world.

Simultaneously an unsettling projection of a father possibly losing his mind and a suburban family disintegrating from the pain of displaced dreams — Colin West’s “Linoleum” drafts a charming, nostalgic landscape set in the fictional town of Fairview Heights where aching secrets lurk underneath the vintage countertops. Exclusive: Bess Rous will round out the cast of Chris McKay’s Universal monster movie, Renfield.
She joins an ensemble that includes Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez and Shohreh Aghdashloo, as previously announced.
The film based on an original story outline by Robert Kirkman centers on Renfield (Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).
Bess will play Caitlyn, a member of a support group for people in toxic relationships.
Ryan Ridley penned the script. McKay is producing the film shooting in New Orleans with Skybound Entertainment’s film team, including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst, with his producing partner Samantha Nisenboim exec producing.

The satiric sci-fi author Douglas Adams once wrote, “Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.” Now, substitute the name Jack Reacher for “space,” and you essentially have the core conceit of the two dozen or so Reacher thrillers written by Lee Child over the last 25 years.
Jack Reacher has many other notable traits besides being huge: He was a veteran Army investigator!

The holiday season is almost here and Amazon Prime is getting in the mood with its list of December 2021 releases. Sure there are the usual Christmas movies to be found but the real gift this month are two big original titles.
The sixth and final season of beloved sci-fi series The Expanse premieres on Dec. 10. Amazon is doing its usual release strategy of three episodes on the premiere day followed by a weekly schedule so there’s still some time to be spent with the crew of the Rocinante. The other big ticket item is the Desi and Lucy biopic Being the Ricardos on Dec. 21. Sure, Aaron Sorkin seems to be completely disinterested in I Love Lucy and Nicole Kidman bears no passing resemblance to the iconic comedienne whatsoever but uh…it’s a movie!

Anime is not for everybody. However, there are certain emblematic series, like Shinichiro Watanabe’s Cowboy Bebop, that are able to transcend the medium and become pillars of pop culture that are adored by mainstream crowds. Cowboy Bebop is a science fiction series that focuses on a misfit crew of bounty hunters who travel the galaxy to make a big score and survive their own neuroses. Cowboy Bebop’s space setting allows the series to embrace sci-fi archetypes, but the anime is a delirious stew of ingredients that means that riffs on westerns, film noir, and even the horror genre are all fair game. All of these cultural reference points are held together with an electric jazz score that’s as unpredictable as the series’ stories.
Much like the indelible crew of the Bebop, this series plays by its own rules and is thoroughly impossible to define. Netflix’s new...

The last time Jody Houser and Roberta Ingranata were playing in the Dr. Who sandbox, they were giving us the rather fabulous Missy 4-parter. Since then, not much in the The Doctor’s comic world, though a lot of news in The Doctor’s TV world. A new Doctor on the horizon it seems. That is for another day of course, and for now we’ll focus on the classics. This book looks at first glance as the perfect playground for Jody Houser’s writing. She loves her classic Doctor’s, and is the master, no pun intended, of adding new wrinkles to what has come before. Let’s jump in.

The search is over: Tracy Morgan has been chosen as the new voice of Early Cuyler ahead of Squidbillies‘ upcoming final season, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Capitalizing on a red-hot deal market, LeBron James’s SpringHill Company has sold what it calls a “significant” minority stake to RedBird Capital Partners, Fenway Sports Group, Nike and Epic Games.
The deal values SpringHill at $725 million. Negotiations with a group of investors had been reported over the summer and again in September. Even though his LA Lakers bowed out in the first round of the NBA playoffs last spring, James had a successful outing in July as star and producer of Warner Bros’ Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The new investment will enable SpringHill to expand its existing businesses and explore new categories and global markets. The company said it will consider M&a opportunities and connect with the creator community. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted film productions, releases and festivals. But nothing, it seems, can get between Korean film and TV fans and their idols, and this week’s Busan International Film Festival is managing to pull off a series of in-person events, despite strict safety protocols.
The first of these, on Thursday, included so-called Open Talk sessions focused on Netflix series “Hellbound” and “My Name,” which are both part of the festival’s new On Screen sidebar. There was another event for sci-fi adventure film “Space Sweepers” and an on-stage discussion between top East Asian directors Bong Joon-ho and Hamaguchi Ryusuke.
In each case, venues were filled to their 50% capacity limits. Thousands more fans, many from overseas and oblivious to the lack of foreign-language translations, followed a livecast on Naver Now. Proximity, contact and photos are typically the purpose of many such fan meetings, not meaningful insight or news announcements.

Singapore-based Xm Studios, the award-winning premium collectibles brand most famous for its DC and Marvel comics-based statues, has revealed new cold cast porcelain pieces for their New York Comic Con Booth (#1337) at NYC's Javits Center beginning today through October 10. Probably the coolest of the bunch are a pair of amazing Godzilla statues, namely of the big guy himself as well as one of his title nemesis from 1994's bizarro cult classic Heisei-era flick "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla."
Standing a little over 23-inches, these hand-painted kaiju pieces appear to be the pride of Xm Studios' chief executive officer Ben Ang, who made the following statement:

The darkly funny American indie drama “Small Engine Repair” works best when it’s a hangout comedy starring three schlubby New England burnouts.
Based on writer-director John Pollono’s stage play, “Small Engine Repair” eventually becomes an unpleasant slow-burning thriller about revenge, sexual violence and toxic masculinity. Thankfully Pollono and his fellow co-leads, Jon Bernthal and Shea Whigham, carry the movie throughout with some choice one-liners and abundant bromantic chemistry.
Pollono, Bernthal and Whigham keep things light, believable, and charming enough, even after the abrupt and seemingly random arrival of preppy drug dealer Chad threatens to ruin the movie’s otherwise aimless fun. Chad pushes “Small Engine Repair” into unexpectedly dark territory, the kind that invites comparisons with real-life sexual predators like Brett Kavanaugh and other prominent politicians. Pollono’s affable drama doesn’t say much about its characters’ boozy locker talk, but it does hold together well enough thanks...

Power Rangers in Space was a revolutionary entry in the Power Rangers franchise. The show had certainly evolved over the previous five seasons but In Space was a quantum leap forward. Airing in 1998 on Fox Kids, the series featured serialized plots, character arcs with depth, and gifts for longtime fans in the form of returning Rangers and villains. Nearly 25 years later, the series remains highly regarded, many elements of it even making their way into the current Power Rangers comics.
But it all could have been so very different. Imagine a version of In Space where Astronema wasn’t the big bad, Red Ranger Andros didn’t exist, and Power Rangers Turbo’s Justin is a a main character! At one point in time these were real possibilities.
To discuss all this we need to go back to May 1997, back around the time the second half of Turbo was beginning to be written.

It only took 79 years but at long last we’re actually, really getting a big budget adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” series. And ahead of the show’s Sept. 24 premiere on Apple TV+, you can watch the official trailer at the top of the page right now.
For those just walking into the room, “Foundation” is a multigenerational story that begins with Professor Hari Seldon, creator of a new kind of math called “psychohistory,” who has figured out beyond any doubt that the Galactic Empire, which by all accounts is in the middle of a golden age, is about to enter a rapid and irreversible decline. Its collapse is inevitable and unavoidable, and what will follow is interstellar anarchy, constant centuries of warfare and a dark age lasting 30,000 years, before a new galactic empire will arise.
But Seldon has a plan that might prevent the worst from happening: Create...

With the NBA still on the outs with China and Nike hit with Chinese backlash over Xinjiang, it might seem that “Space Jam: A New Legacy” has two serious fouls against its chances of entering the world’s largest film market.
But signs indicate that Beijing may uniquely embrace the “Space Jam” star LeBron James in a way that could actually give the film an assist, despite China’s ongoing spat with the league and James’ lifetime Nike deal.
The Malcolm D. Lee-directed film debuted in U.S. cinemas and on HBO Max on July 16. If it ever releases, it will hit China at least a month later, significantly depressing returns.
The NBA’s China troubles date back to 2019 when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, infuriating Beijing and leading state broadcaster CCTV to banish the league from its airwaves.

“Chess isn’t normally what you would consider a sound orientated sport,” admits “The Queen’s Gambit” sound designer Wylie Stateman in our recent webchat. He continues, “Beth plays it in her head, against her own inner demons, set to period music. It is an amazing palette of stuff.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The Netflix limited series tells the story of chess prodigy, Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), during the Cold War. When playing chess, Beth escapes into a world where pieces move on the ceilings. The sound designer explains, “When you have this fantasy, where you can go inside somebody’s head, it’s a very sound reliant creative opportunity. For us, a lot of that was to be simple and sweep the audience along. It’s clever because it is often done with music and score and supplemental pieces of sound design.”

Under Childhood is a column on children’s cinema—movies about and for kids.Buried beneath Looney Tunes slapstick and Warner Bros. advertisements passed as homage, the main conflict of Space Jam: A New Legacy (between a father and son who don’t share the same dreams) is a formative and necessary one. Space Jam (1996) opens with a reenactment of the 1993 press conference where Jordan announced his retirement from basketball and concludes with his return to the Chicago Bulls. But the more family-oriented Space Jam: A New Legacy is more about LeBron James as a father than as a basketball player. The successes of “King James” (the player’s nickname and Instagram handle) act as the film’s backdrop. The opening credits show James’ rise from a high school superstar growing up in poverty with a single mother to a legendary NBA player. We see his happy family of three...

Leading this weekend’s box-office results is a single question: Exactly what is the impact of home platforms on theatrical grosses?
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” (Warner Bros.) and “Black Widow” (Disney) — the #1 and #2 films this weekend — both can be seen at home, although in very different ways. “Space Jam,” as with all Warners releases this year, is free for HBO Max subscribers from its first week. “Widow” costs $29.99 to view, and then only for Disney+ subscribers.
“Space” is a surprising #1, both for its better-than-expected performance — and because “Black Widow” took such a steep plunge, dipping 67 percent in its second weekend. Since 2015, the last 12 MCU releases had second- weekend drops from 45 percent (“Black Panther”) to 62 percent.
As to why, it seems unfair to blame it on PVOD. The availability was the same at opening, so why would it be more of a factor in the second week than in the first?...
