About us
EU Agency The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency which aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden. Our Mission: To identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by communicable diseases. Further to this, the ECDC works to provide timely information to the European Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health. In order to achieve this mission, ECDC works in partnership with national health protection bodies across Europe to strengthen and develop continent-wide disease surveillance and early warning systems. By working with experts throughout Europe, ECDC pools Europe's health knowledge to develop authoritative scientific opinions about the risks posed by current and emerging infectious diseases. ❤️ Love Smart This Valentine’s Day! ❤️ Love is in the air… but so are STIs. Don’t let an unwelcome surprise ruin your romance! 💔 ✔ Use condoms – they protect you and your partner. ✔ Get tested – STIs are often silent but can have serious consequences. ✔ Talk openly – breaking the stigma around STIs helps everyone stay safe and healthy. ✔ Follow treatment – if you test positive, complete your treatment to protect yourself and others. Gonorrhoea and syphilis cases are skyrocketing 📈—but the good news? STIs are preventable, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of. Take control of your health: visit a clinic, talk to your doctor, and know your status. Your health is worth it. Protect yourself, protect your love. 💕 Read more about STIs prevention: bit.ly/ECDCSTIs2025 #ValentinesDay ❤️ #SafeSex #STIawareness #GetTested #ProtectYourLove #NoStigma #TreatmentMatters #TestTreatPrevent #ECDC4PublicHealth #SexEducation #SexualEducation

𝗦𝗧𝗜 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 – 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise across Europe, with cases of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis increasing significantly, according to our latest annual epidemiological reports for 2023. ➡️ Chlamydia: most frequently reported bacterial STI in Europe with over 230,000 cases, mainly affecting young women (20–24). ➡️ Gonorrhoea: Nearly 100,000 cases — a 31% jump in one year and 300% since 2014 —spreading among both heterosexual and LGBTQ+ communities. ➡️ Syphilis: 41,000+ cases, with rates doubling since 2014, especially among men who have sex with men. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Some STIs, like gonorrhoea, are becoming harder to treat due to antibiotic resistance. Some infections can have serious long-term health effects if left untreated: ➡️ If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to significant health problems, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, and infertility in both men and women. ➡️ Untreated syphilis can cause long-term complications in the heart and nervous system and if a pregnant woman has untreated syphilis, the baby may suffer severe complications. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼: ✔ Use protection and look for preventive measures — to reduce the risk of STIs. ✔ Get tested regularly — especially if you have new or multiple partners. ✔ Seek treatment early — most STIs are curable or manageable with prompt care. ✔ Talk to your partners about sexual health to help prevent further spread. Raising awareness and taking preventive steps can help stop the rise of STIs! #TestTreatPrevent Read more in our press release and find all of the annual reports on: #Gonorrhoea, #Chlamydia, #Syphilis, #CongenitalSyphilis and #LymphogranulomaVenereum linked to it: https://lnkd.in/dZfVYxFG #SafeSex #SexualEducation #Prevention #STIs #STI #SexEd

Did you know that liver cancer is a major public health concern in Europe? It's the 6th leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with over 54,000 deaths in 2022 alone. #HepatitisB and #HepatitisC are major risk factors for liver cancer, the good news is that both are preventable and treatable. We see inequalities in liver cancer incidence across Europe. We need to tackle these through targeted interventions, improved access to testing and treatment, and greater awareness. Together, we can reduce the burden of liver cancer in Europe. Let's work together to scale up prevention, testing, and treatment services. ---------------------------------- More on #ViralHepatitis: https://lnkd.in/dSg2pX3h... #LiverCancer #WorldCancerDay #CancerAwareness #VaccinesSaveLives #UnitedInProtection #EUCancerPlan

Both vaccines are key tools in cancer prevention and are recommended for children and adults at risk. Learn how these vaccines can safeguard your health and reduce cancer risks.
