Traffic Data

Enterprise access to Mapbox traffic data with global coverage. Build your custom routing engine, automotive platform or traffic analysis solution with industry-leading accuracy for live and typical traffic, drawn from a globally distributed user base of more than 700M Monthly Active Users.

Live and Typical traffic

Mapbox traffic data contains live and typical traffic for 30 billion road segments, in 5 minute increments.

300 million miles of data daily

Our global user base of more than 700M monthly active users drives more traffic coverage on more roads vs. traffic data sources relying on fixed sensors or niche use cases.

Continually tested and improved

Access constantly updated data, benchmarked and tested against ground truth. Machine learning algorithms continuously improve accuracy over time.

Integrate with OSM, HERE, or TomTom

However it’s built, your application can incorporate Mapbox global traffic data. Use OpenStreetMap or openLR encoding to work with any map.

Leveraging the power of the crowd

The key to Mapbox Traffic Data is wide adoption and data availability. Every month, more than 700M monthly active users across 45,000 Android and iOS applications touch Mapbox maps. This highly diversified and distributed data source generates more than 400 billion live location updates from the ground each month.

Industry-leading accuracy with validation and machine learning

Mapbox automatically benchmarks Traffic Data against observed moving vehicles (“ground truth”) over a data sample of more than 1 million trips every day. Machine learning techniques use this validation to continuously improve over time, achieving industry-leading accuracy.

Access Mapbox traffic in any application

Access traffic data directly, outside of Mapbox SDKs and APIs, to analyze or integrate with your custom routing engines. Traffic Data is natively matched to OpenStreetMap, and also available via openLR format to allow matching to other maps like HERE and TomTom

Mapbox traffic data being used in a mobile device

“Mapbox Data Service's strategic move to sell live traffic data is unique to the industry, and will be particularly well suited for urban planning, route planning at scale, and other use cases that require the analysis of raw traffic data or the simulation of billions of potential routes. Importantly, Mapbox's offering, and associated pricing, is simple, transparent, and scalable.”

Frequently asked questions

General

What is Mapbox Traffic Data?

Mapbox Traffic Data is a dataset of estimated road speeds. It includes live speeds representing current traffic conditions and typical speeds with typical traffic conditions throughout the week.

Why is Mapbox Traffic Data useful?

Powering custom routing engines: Mapbox Traffic Data is designed to integrate with routing engines (e.g., OSRM or Graphhopper) to generate traffic-aware ETAs, and find the most efficient routes including traffic data.

Traffic analysis and simulation: Mapbox Traffic Data can be used for traffic analysis, urban planning, and other use cases that require analysis of raw traffic data.

What is the difference between Typical and Live speeds?

Typical: Estimated speeds throughout the week based on historical observations. Typical traffic is available in 5 minute increments for a typical day of the week (e.g., 1:30-1:35pm Monday).

Live: Current speed based on live data, where available. Live speed profiles are updated every 5 minutes, based on data not more than 15 minutes old.

Since Live data is not available for all roads, many customers fall back to Typical speeds when live data is not available. Offline routing, planning, and simulation only use Typical speeds.

How is Mapbox Traffic Data calculated?

Mobile applications that use a Mapbox SDK send location data (only where permitted by the end user through their mobile device’s operating system, which they may opt-out of at any time). Mapbox then anonymizes and aggregates such location telemetry and then calculates speed statistics for the road network, producing traffic updates.

Where is Mapbox Traffic Data available?

Mapbox Traffic Data has global coverage, including

  • North America
  • Western Europe
  • Middle East
  • Australia & New Zealand
  • Japan & Korea

For coverage information in specific geographic markets, please contact us.

How do I get started?

See our documentation for details on sample data and format. If you’d like to evaluate in a specific area, contact our sales team.

Data Format

How is Mapbox Traffic Data stored and formatted?

Mapbox Traffic Data is stored in files specific to the intersection of a time zone and a Zoom 7 tile, as described in this specification. Each Zoom 7 tile is large enough to capture a major metropolitan area, small US state, or small European country. You can view tiles using an interactive tool here.

To see our full format, you can view our documentation.

How can I use Mapbox Traffic Data with another map like HERE or TomTom?

Mapbox Traffic Data is available using openLR encoding, which can be used for any map. See http://www.openlr.org for more information on openLR.

How large is Mapbox Traffic Data?

Data size per tile depends on road density. For a highly-populated area (e.g., city center):

  • typical data: Traffic Data for a dense urban tile is approximately 2GB compressed or 20GB uncompressed. Most tiles are much smaller than this.
  • live data: Approximately 5 MB per tile, and covers only roads with live traffic estimate.

How often is the data updated?

  • live traffic files are updated every 5 minutes, based on data not more than 15 minutes old.
  • typical traffic is updated monthly.
Access

How do I access the data?

Mapbox Traffic Data is available through secure data delivery via AWS S3 bucket or Google Cloud GCP bucket.

Licensing

How much does Mapbox Traffic Data cost?

Mapbox Traffic Data is only available through an Enterprise plan, and is licensed annually for a specific geographic region (city, state, or country). Contact our sales team for more information.

What are the contractual limitations?

There are two contractual limitations on Mapbox Traffic Data:

Resell and creation of similar datasets: As described in our standard terms of service,

  • You cannot resell or redistribute Mapbox Traffic Data
  • You cannot develop, test, validate and/or improve any service or dataset that is a substitute for, or substantially similar to Mapbox Traffic Data

For clarity, comparisons of Traffic Data to ground truth are allowed for testing and evaluation purposes. However, automated of Traffic Data to other datasets (for instance, training a similar dataset) is prohibited.

Data Sharing: Because traffic data relies on aggregate statistics generated by Mapbox’s customers’ anonymized users, location telemetry (generated by a licensed application powered by Mapbox traffic data) comes to Mapbox servers and is promptly anonymized. For instance, if traffic data is used in a route planning application in the United States, location telemetry will come to Mapbox and then be promptly anonymized prior to generating aggregate statistics.

Can I use Mapbox Traffic Data without a Mapbox map?

Yes - you may use Mapbox Traffic Data in conjunction with any map (or without any map at all).
