Flooding Likely in the South Next Week

Image
The National Weather Service is forecasting more than seven inches of rain in east Texas and far west Louisiana this week.  At this point, only "limited" flooding impacts are forecast by the NWS. I will keep an eye on this and will update the forecast early in the week.

6:30pm EST Thursday Winter Storm Forecast

Image
National Weather Service watches and warnings as plotted by Pivotal Weather as of 6:20pm. Reminder: Pink = winter storm watch.  Purple = winter weather advisory.  Sand = high wind advisory. Deep blue = freezing warnings.  We now have winter storm warnings from Texas to the Atlantic Coast. If you are planning to fly tomorrow I urge you to get on the phone or your computer now and see if they will re-route you away from the hubs in Atlanta and Charlotte.  Please stay off the roads if at all possible if you live near or south of I-40. Many roads in the region are gridlocked already.  AccuWeather Radar at 6:24pm 8am Friday 7pm Friday 6am Saturday

The winter storm in the South has begun. Below is the radar for 9:05am. I am working on an updated forecast and will have it up later this morning. Wanted to let you know that I have worked with the advertising company to get pop-up ads off this site. While I make less money, I'm hoping you will come to the site more often and help make up for it.  AccuWeather.com

Updated Winter Storm Forecast, 9:30pm CST

Image
--- This Forecast Has Been Updated  --- You Will Find the New Forecast Here After a quick look at the new data this evening, I believe the forecast is still good. There may be light amounts of freezing rain in north central Texas as far south as Waco. It will not be enough to cause power outages but -- if it occurs -- it will make roads very slick.  The snow amount forecasts haven't changed. I believe DFW will receive 1-3" with heavier amounts as you go northeast. I-30 will become a mess for its entire route.  --- original forecast still valid --- Here are the latest NWS winter weather warnings and watches as of 3:15pm Note: the white "hole" in southwest Texas will be filled in with a purple winter weather advisory for 1-3 inches of snow.  Color codes: Pink = winter storm warning  Dark green = winter storm watch Purple = winter weather advisory  Bright green = ongoing flood warning  Dark blue and bright turquoise = freeze warnings.  As expected, t...

The snow in north Texas should begin Thursday afternoon and spread north and east thereafter.  Temperatures are going to be bitterly cold. Please make cold weather preparations now!!

Texas and Oklahoma: Late Week Winter Storm

Image
Texas: we don't want a repeat of the catastrophic Valentine's Weekend Winter Storm and Cold Wave that took hundreds of lives. So, I am starting my forecasts for this storm a bit earlier than usual in hopes of alerting everyone so they can take protective measures in sufficient time to mitigate the risks of cold, ice and snow.  Overview Above is the probability of 4" or more snow and/or  a quarter inch of freezing rain or sleet. This product (NWS) did well in the early states of the forecasts for the weekend blizzard and ice storm that is now moving out into the Atlantic.  ERCOT, which runs Texas' electric grid is alerting people to the impending storm and "higher electrical demand and the potential for lower reserves." How would I prepare at this point? Have the fireplace ready to go. If your chimney has not been inspected this winter, it is a good time to do so. Make sure you have plenty of firewood.  Get some extra cash, if possible. ATM's do not work f...

Image
Newest Tornado Watch As mentioned below, it turns out the chance of tornadoes south of my red outline has increased. Please keep an eye on the weather in this region the rest of the evening..until midnight. My Forecast Until 8pm I believe there will be several tornadoes yet this afternoon and evening in the red outlined area. Please continue to monitor the latest weather information for possible warnings. There is also a lesser risk of tornadoes in the Texarkana to Paris to Tyler area. It would be wise to keep an eye on the weather in that area, also.  Forecasting note for meteorologists: Since the mid-1970's, we've known that scattered supercells ahead of a line are a favored area for tornado formation. That is probably going to be the case this evening.  New Tornado Watch, 1:35pm 2:20pm Update Two independent forecast techniques indicates that the risk for tornadoes is rapidly increasing in the outlined area. This includes southeast Kansas which was not highlighted in other...
