American Tapestry: Weaving Together Past, Present, and Future
American Tapestry: Weaving Together Past, Present, and Future is a wide-ranging special initiative at NEH that leverages the humanities to strengthen American democracy, expand opportunity for all, and build resilience for communities and cultural organizations. Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence
NEH’s special initiative Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence supports research projects that seek to understand and address the ethical, legal, and societal implications of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative takes inspiration from NEH’s founding legislation, which tasks the agency with making the American people “masters of their technology and not its unthinking servants.”
Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative
As a part of NEH’s partnership with the Department of the Interior on the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, NEH encourages projects that further public understanding and knowledge of the Federal Indian boarding school system. From 1819 through the 1970s the government of the United States operated a system of schools for Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children. Pacific Islands Cultural Initiative
NEH’s Pacific Islands Cultural Initiative is a strategic initiative that aims to strengthen the cultural and educational sectors in Amerika Samoa, Guåhan (Guam), Hawaiʻi, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (CNMI).

United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture
NEH’s founding legislation tasks the agency with “fostering of mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all persons and groups.” United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture leverages the humanities to foster cross-cultural understanding between diverse groups across the nation, with an emphasis on projects that increase public awareness on forms of hate such as antisemitism and Islamophobia in the United States.
A More Perfect Union
NEH’s A More Perfect Union initiative supports the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July 4, 2026 by funding projects that enhance our understanding of the country’s founding period.
