Medical Standards

Wildland firefighters must be prepared for rigorous job duties to keep themselves and others safe and to reduce injury or fatigue. A Work Capacity Test is administered to determine if persons are physically capable of performing the duties of wildland firefighting. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group Risk Management Committee provides interagency national leadership in wildland firefighter risk management, health, and safety. All federal arduous duty firefighters adhere to medical standards as authorized under 5CFR 339 – Medical Qualification Determinations. The Federal Interagency Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards establish the minimum medical fitness for arduous duty. Light or moderate duty firefighters may be required to do a medical screening process.
