Explore a comprehensive range of technologies—from sensors and RF to cloud infrastructure and analytics
Gain the insights needed to make informed technical decisions across communication protocols, security, and system design
Description
Industries are embracing IoT technologies to improve operational expenses, product life, and people's well-being. An architectural guide is needed if you want to traverse the spectrum of technologies needed to build a successful IoT system, whether that's a single device or millions of IoT devices.
IoT and Edge Computing for Architects, 2E encompasses the entire spectrum of IoT solutions, from IoT sensors to the cloud. It examines modern sensor systems, focusing on their power and functionality. It also looks at communication theory, paying close attention to near-range PAN, including the new Bluetooth® 5.0 specification and mesh networks. Then, the book explores IP-based communication in LAN and WAN, including 802.11ah, 5G LTE cellular, Sigfox, and LoRaWAN. It also explains edge computing, routing and gateways, and their role in fog computing, as well as the messaging protocols of MQTT 5.0 and CoAP.
With the data now in internet form, you'll get an understanding of cloud and fog architectures, including the OpenFog standards. The book wraps up the analytics portion with the application of statistical analysis, complex event processing, and deep learning models. The book then concludes by providing a holistic view of IoT security, cryptography, and shell security in addition to software-defined perimeters and blockchains.
Who is this book for?
This book is for architects, system designers, technologists, and technology managers who want to understand the IoT ecosphere, technologies, and trade-offs, and develop a 50,000-foot view of IoT architecture. An understanding of the architectural side of IoT is necessary.
What you will learn
Understand the role and scope of architecting a successful IoT deployment
Scan the landscape of IoT technologies, from sensors to the cloud and more
See the trade-offs in choices of protocols and communications in IoT deployments
Become familiar with the terminology needed to work in the IoT space
Broaden your skills in the multiple engineering domains necessary for the IoT architect
Implement best practices to ensure reliability, scalability, and security in your IoT infrastructure
This book gives a comprehensive view of the use cases, protocols and integrations for IoT and Edge. Gives any architect the perspective needed to implement a solution on IoT. I liked also that there is a chapter in which IoT is related to Machine Learning and Data Analytics. I have always thought that these technologies are closely related and I find useful see this relationship formally presented here.I appreciate the effort of the authors in giving perspective into the IoT and Edge world!

The only clarification I recommend is that Perry Lea's "IoT and Edge Computing for Architects" applies to ALL architects whether information technology, business strategy, financial, and operational - the audience that can benefit from Mr. Lea's work is much larger than the book title may convey. If you prefer to catch yourself up and to be kept up on IoT, begin with and stay with Perry Lea.To command the incoming Silicon Tsunami (or at least survive being crushed by same), skip the industry analyst white papers, the hyperbolic hysteria fomented by headline craving journalists, and dispense with burning precious time viewing mind-numbing IoT acolytes espousing virtues of their automated obsolescence. Expect nothing of value to come from proclamations of special interest group initiatives as preordained IoT standards producing only Creativity-Crippling-Cookie-and-Coffee-Committees-in-Cramped-Coastal-Convention-Centers-Coddling-Complacency-Cloaked-in-Compatibility.Mr. Lea's prose is clean and his perspective objective. The reader knows they are in the grasp of a life-long learner gifted with agility to communicate myriad topics from myriad perspectives and to synthesize these consistent with an integral theme. The comprehensive breadth of this publication with its organic subject matter demands it remain evergreen being revisited by author and reader fitting nicely with Mr. Lea's blog.Well done Perry Lea!

Perry Lea’s book, “The IoT and Edge Computing for Architects”, will take an indispensable position in my reference library. The breadth and depth the author explores makes it extremely valuable as an education tool and a reference for those architecting IoT solution. The book walks the reader through the detailed steps that must be followed to architect the best end-to-end solution for a particular business need. From selection of sensors aligned with power and communication requirements, to selection of appropriate data communications and choosing an edge processor to process the sensor signals and finally the connectivity to the cloud, the author walks us through the considerations at each step. For instance, the book highlights the consideration of latency into the decision to deploy programming logic whether in the cloud or at the edge. It also provides detailed information to help choose the correct communication medium to reach sensors, objects and actuators and take action. The IOT world requires multiple domains of engineering, analytics and other expertise. The book's explanation of requirements for each skillset and the collaboration required will make this a must read for any member of my organization's IoT project team.

Excellent resource. As someone indicated, there is a significant focus on the network details but given the topic, I think that's fair. Recommended for people who already have solid IT experience and want to understand more about IoT and Edge Computing.

I am a RF engineer and this books provides an overview on RF theory which is a surprise to me. It explains the theory clearly with the right amount of details. In with respect to IoT - I have not finished the whole book but sections of various chapters. I was able to jump around and get the information I know. Highly recommend!
