In Gallatin, N.Y., the husband-wife co-founders behind the design firm Workstead converted a 1850s clapboard house into a rural idyll.

I looked and looked but could not find a link for getting inside this charmer. It looks lived in and loved with perfectly imperfect landscaping. I would get rid of the shrubs across the front foundation that are hiding the house. If the foundation is unattractive, I would plant something lower. North 25th Street is lined with dozens of this style home, but this particular cheap house is one of the homes with the least alterations from its 1917 build date. The 3/1 cottage boasts a clapboard sided first level with shingles above, front gabled porch, natural woodwork, built-ins, hardwood floors, and rich paneling with plate rail. The kitchen appears to be an after thought, but the house is a cutie!

The Marshall Harris House in Janesville, Wisconsin, is a neat clapboard Queen Anne from a Barber mail-order design that bears similar features to a house in Barber's The Cottage Souvenir No. 2 catalog.
