Twenty-five years ago, a tragic event claimed the lives of 31 Merchant Marines, and the Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Swimmer Program was conceived to prevent such disasters from ever happening again. The program has been a guardian angel to many fates nearly taken by the sea.

SAND KEY, Fla. - A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter and a 47-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Sand Key participated in a search-and-rescue demonstration during a media outreach day March 11. Two people were rescued from a sinking 80-foot yacht off the Florida coast. The U.S. Coast Guard swiftly responded to the distress call received late Monday night.
