Whether you pick a bit of everything in a repeating pattern or a few varieties en masse, these are my favorite flower pairings for unmatched cottage garden charm. Note: all of these look even better when anchored with evergreen shrubs like boxwoods, soft touch holly, globe arborvitae, pyramid shaped shrubs, and specimen trees. Plant everything in clumps of three or five (unless a large shrub that takes up 3x3’ or more) for visual impact. Use the trifecta method: 20% spike, 40% mound/dome, and 40% fan and filler shaped flowers for balance. We filled the beds with cardboard, then stumps, then got shredded wood chip (or use plant matter like sticks) then we filled the top 12-18in with soil using scoops of the Sutherlands mixed compost/bed soil! (Do not mix wood chip & soil-LAYER them) Waaay cheaper! Do not do bags of soil haha.
