Remarkable advances made in aviation during WW1 are still at the core of air power today.

Jo Kotula art — WW1 dogfight between German Ace, Oberleutnant Ernst Udet in a Fokker D.VII vs French pilot in a SPAD. Easily recognizable by his red and white striped upper wing, Udet painted on his elevator/tailplane his famous nose-thumbing legend, "Du doch nicht", meaning "but not you!" The French pilot probably lived but a few moments after getting close enough to read this derisive admonition.
