Quantum Numbers

The document discusses the four quantum numbers used to describe electrons in atoms: the principal quantum number n determines the size and energy of an orbit; the azimuthal quantum number l determines the shape of subshells; the magnetic quantum number m describes the orientation of orbitals in space; and the spin quantum number s represents the direction of an electron's spin as either +1/2 or -1/2.

QUANTUM NUMBERS:

They are used to describe identity of an electron in atom, sub-Orbits and orbitals.
They are also used to identify various energy levels available with the atom. We have four quantum numbers. They are. 1. PRINCIPAL QUANTUM NUMBER: Proposed by Neil Bohr and denoted by n n can have values 1,2,3,4

It determines the size of the orbit as well as energy of the electron.

2. AZIMUTHAL QUANTUM NUMBER: Proposed by Sommerfeld and denoted by l

l can have values 0 to (n-1)

It tells about the shape of subshells.

3.

MAGNETIC QUANTUM NUMBER: Proposed by Lande and denoted by m Values are +l to l including 0.

It describes the orientation of the orbital in space around the nucleus.

4.

SPIN QUANTUM NUMBER: Proposed by Uhlenbeck and Goudsmith and denoted by s It is based on the direction of spin of electron. Clockwise spin is represented by + and anticlockwise spin
