(B) Expansion of Awareness and Amplification of Experiences: 166 Integrating CBT & Hypnosis

The document discusses how hypnosis can be integrated with cognitive behavioral therapy to treat depression. It outlines several hypnotherapeutic techniques that can be used, including (1) exploring and restructuring negative schemas through techniques like age regression, (2) expanding awareness and amplifying positive experiences, and (3) reducing guilt and self-blame through reframing past experiences. Developing "antidepressive pathways" by focusing on positive imagery is also discussed.

INTEGRATING CBT & HYPNOSIS

no longer necessary for her to retreat to the dark cave. She also realized that there is no direct relationship between loving and losing. Her relationship with her husband significantly improved. Other hypnotic uncovering or restructuring procedures such as affect bridge, age regression, age progression, and dream induction can be used to explore and restructure negative schemas.

(b) Expansion of Awareness and Amplification of Experiences

Hypnosis can facilitate expansion of awareness and amplification of experiences. Brown and Fromm (1990) described a technique called Enhancing Positive Affective Experience, which expands and intensifies positive feelings by (a) bringing underlying emotions into awareness, (b) creating awareness of various feelings, (c) intensifying positive affect, (d) enhancing discovered affect, (e) inducing positive moods, and (f) increasing motivation. Such a procedure not only disrupts the depressive cycle but also helps to develop antidepressive pathways.

(c) Reduction of Guilt and Self-Blame

Various hypnotherapeutic techniques can also be used to reframe the clients past experiences that cause guilt or self-regret. Hammond (1990) provides several techniques for dealing with guilt and selfblame. For example, Watkins (in Hammond, p. 312) describes a technique for reducing guilt that she calls The Door of Forgiveness, and Hammond (p. 313) and Stanton (in Hammond, 1990, p. 313) describe two techniques for dumping the rubbish. Stantons The Laundry (see Hammond, 1990, p. 313) technique helped Janet (see Case 1 later in the chapter) to deal with the guilt over her children.

(d) Developing Antidepressive Pathways

If depressive pathways can be developed through conscious negative focusing, then it would be possible to develop antidepressive or happy pathways by focusing on positive imagery (Schwartz, 1984). During hypnosis the client is helped to focus on positive but realistic images, and is given posthypnotic suggestions about positive focusing or whenever possible, imagine playing a happy tape in your mind.
