Short Story Irony Project

1. Choose one of these four short stories to read:

The Open Window by Saki
The Landlady by Roald Dahl
The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty
The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

2. Read the story once for comprehension (make sure you understand what is
happening, who the characters are, etc.) You may want to write down some
notes afterward about those things.

3. Look at your definition of irony. What examples of irony do you see in this
story? Did the author use verbal or situational irony? How do you know? Add
these to your notes.

4. What other literary tools has the author used in this story? Find examples.

5. Join with the others who read the same story.

6. Come up with a way to teach this short story to the class.

Your presentation must include:

– Reading the story to the class

– Discussing the situational irony as well as other literary tools used
– Interactive activity to get the class involved (you cannot lecture the whole
time)

This project is worth 50 points!
