    Definition Transitive Verb


    A verb that directs action toward something or someone named in the predicate is called a transitive verb. A transitive verb (V) Requires an object (O) and the object comes after the verb.

    The word in the predicate to which the action of the verb is directed is the object. A transitive verb always has at least one object. If you can answer the questions what? or whom? after an action, then you know that the verb is transitive.

    Examples :
    You must leave this towel on the chair. In this example, the verb "leave" takes a direct object: towel. Hence, it is a transitive verb. I watched Titanic yesterday. In this example, the verb "watch" is used transitively and takes the object: Titanic. Hence, it is a transitive verb.

    He wrote the manuscript. In this example, the verb wrote takes a direct object: manuscript. Hence, it is a transitive verb. The players blamed the coach for their defeat. In this example, the verb Blame takes a direct object: coach. Hence, it is a transitive verb.

    Underline the transitive verbs and circle object in the following sentences.

    1. He bought a book. 2. Every day I move my things from one side of the desk to the other. 3. Suzan read the book by Shakespeare. 4. Emma read newspaper while waiting for her mother. 5. The dog shook his tail.

    6. We are eating pancakes for breakfast. 7. Mr. Thomas laid the keys on the TV. 8. We corrected our mistakes when we received our test papers from the teacher. 9. They gave the money to the shopkeeper. 10. The technicians repaired the computer.
