Earthwork in canals
There may be three cases of canal section which are 1. Fully in excavation 2. Partly in excavation & partly in filling 3. Fully in embankment
Fully in excavation
In this method quantity of earthwork is calculated on the principle of road estimate The formula for calculation is = (Bd+sd^2)*length Width of permanent land = B+2sd+road width on the sides+ extra land widths beyond the roads. Area of permanent land= width of permanent land* length
Economical depth of digging When excavated quantity is just sufficient for banking portion. Area of excavation = Bd+sd^2 Area of banking = (b1+b2)h+s1h^2+s2h These areas are multiplied by lengths give quantities. Economical depth of digging can be calculated by equating the quantity of cutting with the quantity of banking.
Area of permanent land in partly digging and partly banking Width of permanent land = sum of widths of bed and two banks +widths required for slope + widths beyond outer toes =B+b1+b2+2s1h+2s2h+extra widths Area of permanent land =widths of permanent land *length
Fully in banking
quantity of earthwork = (whole sectional area-sectional area of channel)*length =[(Bd+s1D^2)-(bH+s1H^2)]*length B = b+b1+b2+2S1H^2 D = d+H area of permanent land fully in banking Width of permanent land =b+B1+b2+2s1H+2s2D+extra width beyond the outer toes. Area of permanent land = width of permanent land*length
Example- estimate the earthwork in digging in channel. Also the earthwork in excavation.
