This document covers key topics in engineering mathematics including:
1. Functions are rules that assign elements from one set to another set. Graphs of functions show ordered pairs of inputs and outputs.
2. Piecewise functions and absolute value functions are discussed. Even and odd functions are defined based on their behavior when the input is negated.
3. Limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals are defined along with examples of problems from engineering entrance exams. Key concepts like the mean value theorem and indeterminate forms are also summarized.

A function f is a rule that assigns to each element x in a set A exactly one element, called f(x) , in a set B. If f is a function with domain A, then its graph is the set of ordered pairs Piecewise Defined Functions The solid dot indicates that the point (1,0) is included on the graph; the open dot indicates that the point (1, 1) is excluded from the graph. Absolute value function Even and Odd Funcions If a function f satisfies f(x)=f(-x), for every number in its domain, then is called an even function If a function f satisfies f(x)=-f(-x), for every number in its domain, then is called an odd function Limits and Derivatives The dashed lines indicate that the values of f(x) oscillate between 1 and -1 infinitely often as approaches 0 . Since the values of do not approach a fixed number as x approaches 0, Limit does not exist Left hand and right hand limits
the right-hand limit of f(x) as x approaches a is equal to L if we can make the values of f(x) arbitrarily close to L by taking x to be sufficiently close to a and x greater than a.
