C1 Review - Polynomials

1.

For each of the following, decide whether it is a polynomial expression or not and, if so,
give its degree.

x 5 2x 2 3
(a) 1 2 x 3 (b) 1 2 (c) 3 x(2 x 1)( x 5) 2 (d)
e)

(f) 0.7684

2.

If A is the polynomial 7 4 x 2 x 3 and B is the polynomial 5 x 3x 2 x 3 , find and write

in ascending powers of x, the polynomials;
(a) A + B
(b) 2A B

3.

Show that x( x 1) 2( x 1)( x 2) x( x 2) 3x 4 is true for all values of x.

4.

By equating coefficients, find the constants a, b and c such that

( x 2 ax 3)( x 2 4 x 1) x 4 2 x 3 bx 2 cx 3 .

5.

Find the remainder when 4 x 3 2 x 2 x 7 is divided by x 1 .

6.

Find the quotient and remainder when

(a) x 3 3 x 2 x 10 is divided by x 4 .
(b) 3 x3 5 x 1 is divided by x 1 .

8.

(a) Show that (x + 1) is a factor of P ( x ) x 3 10 x 2 23 x 14 .

(b) Hence find all the linear factors of P(x).
(c) Sketch the graph of y = P(x), showing clearly all points of intersection with the axes.
Find the value of k if (x - 2) is a factor of x 3 3x 2 kx 10 .

The polynomial f(x) is given by f ( x) x 3 x 2 7 x k , where k is a real number.

( x 3) is a factor of f(x).
a) Find the value of k.
b) Factorise f(x) as the product of a linear factor and a quadratic factor.
c) Show that there is only one real value of x for which f ( x) 0 .

The cubic polynomial P(x) is defined by P( x) 3x3 ax 2 22 x b .

a) P(x) leaves a remainder of 18 when it is divided by x 1 and a remainder of 40 when
is divided by x 2 . Find the values of a and b.
b) Use these values and the factor theorem to factorise P(x) completely.
c) Hence solve the equation P(x) = 0 and sketch the graph of y P (x) , showing clearly
all points of intersection with the axes.

*11.

Show that both x 3 and x 3 are factors of x 4 x 3 x 2 3x 6 .

Hence write down one quadratic factor of
x 4 x 3 x 2 3 x 6 , and find a second
quadratic factor of this polynomial.

*12.

A function is defined as f ( x) x3 6 x 2 11x 6 .

a) Factorise f(x) completely.
b) Hence show that the value of f(a) is a multiple of 3 for any integer a.
