The following course descriptions are included in the SDHS student handbook.
The English Department curriculum stresses sequential writing, reading, analysis of literature
and vocabulary study.
English 9
This course includes a review of grammar concepts and paragraph and essay development. Students study
vocabulary. Emphasis is on short stories, novels, drama and poetry. Students study The Tragedy of Romeo
and Juliet. Research skills such as note writing and paraphrasing are emphasized. Students write essays
based on a variety of subjects.

This course is a college preparatory class. Strong reading and writing skills are required. The course
includes an in-depth research paper combining content from both English and geography. Students will
study poetry, short stories, novels and drama.

Welcome to English 9. In this course you will read and analyze world literature and informational texts that will aid you in
preparing for a career path or a college path. You will also work daily on improving grammar, refining writing skills, and
cultivating communication skills. Additionally, the classroom time will be structured to include mini-lessons, independent
work, turn-and-talk sessions, and mini conferences. This classroom setting will foster great communication skills, and it will
help you to focus on specific areas of weakness.

[Classroom Policies & Procedures]


[Tardies] Tardy 3 times = Detention (Tardy 4 or more times = Saturday School)
[Make-up Work] Make-up work will be allowed and is usually considered on a case-by-case basis, if absences are excused. You are
responsible for obtaining missed assignments and instructions from me. DO NOT interrupt instructional time to ask about missed work.
See me before school, after school, or during advisory period to discuss missed assignments and assessments. You may send email inquires
about assignments, while youre recovering at home, and submit your through an email as well.
[Cell Phones] The policy is posted in classroom. *Confiscation of your phone for the duration of the class period or school day is certain,
if you do not follow the cell phone policy or specific instructions with regard to lessons. Office referrals will follow-up.
[Homework] All homework will be graded. *When novels and short stories are assigned, you are expected to read at home. Always
assume that all of the assigned texts and novels are to be read and reviewed at home.
[Health Passes] You are required to have a written pass from me in order to see the school nurse. Do not come to class late with a health
pass. If the bell rings while you are in her office, excuse yourself and come to class. After you are marked present, youll receive an
updated health pass from me. Follow the procedures, or serve morning detention.
[Hall Pass/Orange Zone] Freshman will use an orange zone pass. If you abuse hall pass privileges, your privileges will be revoked.
[Grades]
Daily grades assignments, vocabulary terms, daily grammar practice quizzes, homework, and essays.
Test grades in-class projects, research paper, journal entries, and literary selections.
EOC exam 25% of the 2nd quarter grade and is the final exam for this course. It will impact your final grade.
[Videos/Movies]
On occasion, a unit of study may be enhanced by viewing selected scenes from a movie. Parental permission to view a video is required.
