Endings Worksheet
We are going to look back at what we have done over the
course of writing our personal narratives. First, we
thought of what to write about by thinking about
important people, places, and strong emotions. After that,
we thought about small moments. We wrote a draft and
then improved our stories by adding concrete detail,
sensory detail, and internal thoughts. Then, on Monday
we wrote strong leads for our story.

strong endings for their stories.

resolving a problem, reaching a goal or changing a
feeling.

Project Effective Story Conclusions

I want us to think back to when we read Owl Moon. The
author, Jane Yolen, ended Owl Moon by reaching a goal.
Lets compare this to when we read An Angel for
Solomon Singer. Cynthia Rylant shows how Solomon
Singer felt at the end of the book. I know we didnt read
Sarah, Plain Tall but the author Patricia MacLochlan
ended her story by resolving a problem.

We can do the same things in our stories. I have some

examples and since we havent discussed any of my
stories I decided to write an ending for a story we all
know very well. I wrote an ending for Mrs. van Biljons
story about when she went fishing with her dad.
Project possible story endings.
Discuss story endings. Thumbs up if that is a pretty good
ending. Which ending is your favorite?
One thing to remember about our story endings is that we
want to relate it back to our strong leads. On Monday we
decided that Mrs. van Biljons strongest lead was her
character lead. What ending do you think goes best with
this lead? Why? What about if Mrs. van Biljon decided
to use her dialogue lead? Would the ending you choose
change?
Okay, I want yall to work to write story endings for you
own personal narratives. Work to write at least two
powerful endings for your story. If you have time you
may work to write the third.
After some work time take a poll of how many endings
students have completed. For students who have at least
two endings have them partner up and work together to
decide which is their strongest ending.
Your ticket to exit is your two endings. If you didnt

finish your two endings for your story, that is your
homework tonight. Tomorrow we will put our draft, our
powerful lead, and our powerful ending together so make
sure you have everything in a safe place. Remember all
of this is a grade, including your story arc.
