RATIONALE and GOALS FOR THIS LESSONWhy is this important to teach? It is important for students to explore the creative aspect
of making a fantastical character while also being able to depict their characters personality
visually as well as in a story. What do you hope to accomplish? I hope for students to be able to
show their Fairy Tale Characters personality visually.
Students will develop a deeper understanding of their Fairy Tale Character and create a
unique mask that portrays their characters personality.
ENDURING BIG IDEA: (Define the BIG IDEA?) What is the big idea that is being investigated
in this lesson? Students will be investigating Fairy Tales and the idea of something that is
fantastical. They will also be exploring personality traits of characters found on fairytale stories
and finding ways to visually interpret them in a mask they can wear. How will you connect the
big ideas about art and artists work with the art making part of this lesson? I will have students
create masks that show personality traits of their Fairy Tale person or creature through their
creations. Students should be able to visually see characteristics of each character just by looking
at each mask by the end of the lesson.

What will students discover and investigate? Students will investigate meaningful art
making through exploring the different personalities of Fairy Tale creatures and how that
personality can be expressed through artistic expression. What will you ask that will guide the
purposeful exploration of materials that will produce meaningful content to the creative
production? How do you imagine your character to look that will help represent who they are?
What makes a person or animal scary? or a prince a hero? What do these characteristics look
like? Why are they perceived that way?
KNOWLEDGE BASE AND KEY CONCEPTSWhat will students learn and KNOW about art and art making from this lesson? Students
will learn that there are more ways to represent a personality of a person or animal then through
words. You can tell a lot about a creature in stories by how they are created or drawn. Key
concepts of the lesson include investigation of personalities, visually exploring traits of fairytale
characters, and performing like your fairytale character, along with interacting with other
fairytale charcters.
OBJECTIVESThe students will begin by deciding what shape of a face their character will have and cut
out that shape from their paper plate. Students will then pick a color of the skin of their
creature. In doing this I will ask why they are choosing the shaped and color that they are. How
does that help in bringing out the personality of your character? Students will then add detail to
their mask to bring their character to life. Once finished they will go onto the carpet and interact
with the other characters that were made. Once everyone is done we will take a class picture
posing in a way that our actor would have.

displays of their characters and their interactions with other students. Does their visual
representation accurately display the personality of their character?

Students interactions with each other will keep students busy while other classmates are still
