CL 321: Separation Processes

Assignment No. 6
1. A sample of air has a dry-bulb temperature of 33 oC and wet-bulb temperature of 23 oC. The total
pressure is atmospheric. (a) Determine its psychrometric properties-humidity, enthalpy, dew point, humid
volume and humid heat. (b) If the sample of air is heated to 50 oC, what will be its wet-bulb temperature?
(c) How much is the heat rejected if 1 kg of air (dry basis) is cooled down from 33 oC to 15 oC? (d) If the
air sample is heated to 50 oC and its pressure doubled, what would be its relative humidity and dew point?
2. The central air-conditioning installation of a building discards 50 cm 3 of air per minute and draws the
same volume of fresh air at 27oC (wet-bulb temp. = 20oC). This air is cooled to 12 oC (saturated).
Calculate the corresponding hourly heat load. The water condensate leaves at 3 oC.
3.Prepare a psychrometric chart for the mixture acetone-nitrogen at a pressure of 800 mm Hg over the
ranges -15 to 60oC, Y = 0 to 3 kg vapor/kg dry gas. Include the following curves, all plotted against
temperature: (a) 100, 75, 50, and 25% humidity; (b) dry and saturated humid volumes; (c) enthalpy of dry
and saturated mixtures expressed as N. m/kg dry gas, referred to liquid acetone and nitrogen at -15 oC; (d)
wet-bulb curves for Tw = 25 oC; (e) adiabatic saturation curves at Tas= 25 and 40oC.
4. A cooling tower of 100 m2 cross-section is required to cool warm water from 42 oC to 29oC at a rate of
225, 000gph. The ambient air at 32 oC has a wet-bulb temperature of 22 oC and the air rate is 6000
kg/h.m2. Determine the minimum air rate and the overall gas-phase enthalpy transfer units.
5. Warm water at 45 oC is to be cooled to 30oC by countercurrent contact with air in a tower packed with
wood slats. The inlet air has a dry-bulb temperature of 31 oC and a wet-bulb temperature of 22 oC. The
mass flow rate of water is 6000 kg/m2.h and that of air is 1.4 times the minimum. The individual gasphase mass transfer coefficient is k Ya = 6000 kg /(m3h Y). The volumetric water-side heat transfer
coefficient is given by hLa = 0.059L0.51Gs kcal/m3.h.K, where L and Gs are mass flow rates of water and
air (dry basis). Determine (a) the dry air flow rate to be used (b) the height of packing required for this
operation.
