Teacher Candidate:

Jonathan Dancy

Date: April 3, 2015

Grade and Topic: World Geography , 12th grade

Length of Lesson:45 minutes

Mentor Teacher:

School: Northwind High School

Mr. Jones

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The student will analyze how selected physical and ecological processes shape the Earths surface.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
1. Given an excel spreadsheet, TLW will analyze the charts selecting 3 states in different regions giving
accurate background information (population, landscapes, climate, etc.)
2. TLW research possible outcomes, background information,
3. TLW assume the trend continues on the chart and critically think about what might happen to the people
and places in those areas and what could be the cause of this trend.
4. Given an excel spreadsheet, TLW will fill in the blank information for one state estimating the best
possible averages according to the states surroundings.
5. Given a computer and word processed software, TLW write a three page essay on the effects the weather
trend might have on three different states in different regions.
6. By the end of the lesson, TLW will understand and recognize the impact global warming can have on
people and landforms.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

ISTE Standards
1. Creativity and innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology.
c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities
6. Technology operations and concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts,
systems, and operations.
a. Understand and use technology systems

Tennessee, Standards
WG.10 Identify regional climatic patterns and weather phenomena and their effects on people and places. (G)

Learning Objective
Analyze regional climatic patterns in certain states. Evaluate the information on the chart in order to draw
possible conclusions. If the trend continues, critically think about how these weather patterns can affect the
people and places in those areas. Also, what might be the cause of these trends?

Problem Statement
GLOBAL WARMING, many people are increasingly becoming worried about the seriousness of this
phenomenon. As an anthropologist (a person with an extensive knowledge of anthropology who uses this
knowledge in their work, typically to solve problems specific to humanity.), youre to analyze the average
rainfall by the decade in the states in the chart and critically think about the possible conclusions that could be
made and the affect the outcome will have on people in those states
MATERIALS:
Word processing
Excel, graphics/charts
Internet resources
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: I will introduce a little background information on global warming. I will then introduce
historical civilizations where natural disasters affected their daily lives (farming, housing arrangement,
migration, etc.)
Procedures:
I will then ask the students ask the students what makes our civilization any
different from others previous mentioned that were in the midst of feeling the wrath of Mother
Nature?
I will lecture about several groups and landforms that were affected by natural
disasters and climate change
I will then allow for group discussion to elaborate on previous lecture. We would
then have open discussion to analyze if natural disasters continued
I would then introduce the excel spreadsheet example and ask them to think about
what if these trends continued and if they lived in certain those states.
Closure:
I would inform the students of their three page essay requiring research to be done
with resources. Paper must be in MLA format.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Advanced

Contributed greatly to group/open discussion. Paper was

well formatted with great resources. Critical thinking was
reflected on the paper. Background information was given.
Accurately filled in missing data.

Average

Contributed averagely to group/open discussion. Paper was

well formatted. Little background information was given.
Some of the missing data on the spreadsheet was correct.

Below Average

Didnt contribute to group/open discussion. No paper/the

paper was not formatted well and little thought was put into
the paper. Did not fill in missing data on spreadsheet

Think Sheet
Could global warming or
other things be causing these
trends or help speeding them
up?
What kinds of landforms are
present in this state?
What might happen to some
of these landforms if these
trends continue?
What might happen to the
people in the state if these
trends continue? What might
happen
Can you fill in the missing
states averages according to
the state that surrounds it?
Take in all the factors
(population, rivers, lakes,
landforms, farming, etc.)
,what state is the most at risk
and why?
