The Midnight Mission is known to be a home for most of those in need. It

was founded by Minister Tom Liddecoat in 1914. The Mission adopted their
name after serving their meals at midnight after church services. It provided
programs that helped many inferior to obtain job training and to help them seek
careers. Over the years, the increase in homeless people overwhelm many
programs, therefore these opportunities had to be drop due to financial instability.
Due to the over population in homeless individuals, the Midnight Missions limited
quantity of rooms cannot meet the demand of the homeless, leaving them
cramped in the streets. Throughout time the streets became polluted with trash
that degraded the area.
The safety of the citizens of Los Angeles is important as the safety of the
individuals that stay at the Midnight Mission. Law enforcement agencies such
LAPD, have yet to develop methods and strategies to regulate the problematic
issues. Our proposal regarding safety plays a major role in how to protect the
defenseless people of the city and the mission. In a livable place there are parks,
churches, hospitals, malls, repair centers and of course united families. Our
mission is to improve a place where many misfortunate individuals go to sleep,
eat, and shower. Our proposals to these solutions intent to provide homeless
people a community to recover and to get proper sanitation.

In his book, Holy Land, D. J

Waldie mentioned there were network
of home schools, staffed by Jewish
parents for one hundred students
because there was no synagogue (308).
Those parents gathered once a week to
create study program. Basically,
Waldie is saying that people in the
community was engaging to help each
other out. That suburb area cannot be
said as a holyland in terms of
equipment and furnishment since that
Jewish subdivision was lacking of an
essential constructionsynagogue.
Nevertheless, those residents
constituted a holyland through their
dedication and contribution of a
Sunday school. The spirit and action of
establishing a better place to live at is
what makes a place a holyland. For this
reason, we plan to find a place that was
crummy and poor, so we can propose
to help those who are in need. Ben
Weingart, as one of the three
developers who have important
contribution to the holyland, donated
money and turned the El Rey Hotel on
skid row into a shelter and
rehabilitation center for the homeless
(171). We decide our location as Skid
Row for two reasons. First of all,
homeless people are always in need.
Furthermore, Skid Row is well known
for its bad environment, so that place
should be a place that needs
redevelopment. We expect our plan to
relieve the homeless people from their
suffering and thus, turn Skid Row into
a holyland. Besides, Ben Weingarts
charitable donation gave us an idea
how we can seek the fund to process
our plan. Our plan regarding the Skid
Row area of the Midnight Missions
shelter has been inspired by D.J.
Waldies memories. Our main
inspiration was derived from the idea
to create a perfect place to live in with
all the commodities ones could ask for.
We intent to provide homeless people a
community to recover and to get
proper sanitation. By applying new and
beneficial programs, many men and
women can experience a safe
community just how D.J Waldie did
with Lakewood.

Summary
Stand

on the corner of Sixth Street and

San Julian and you can see five large
shelters offering services to the homeless,
mentally ill, and addicted. The street is also
crowded with people who need shelter, but
have to make do with the sidewalk
(Renee).
The Midnight Mission is home to many
homeless citizens of the city of Los
Angeles. Many of the people live outside on
the street surrounding the facility because
housing is only available during the season.
Throughout the rest of the year, the streets
are full with makeshift homes and camping
tents making crime easily to occur in tight
living areas. The types of people that live
on the streets have mixed personalities for
example, war veterans, people with mental
disabilities, and drug junkies that inhabit the
streets of the mission making them
unpredictable.
On our visit to the MIdnight Mission, we
had the chance to the interview a security
guard. Edward Matthew was able to give us
very good information about the mission.
We asked him a couple of questions that
he was able to answer to his best
knowledge. I asked what types of problems

does the mission have inside the facility? He

answered, the main problem we have are drug
usage in the restrooms (Interview). Drug usage
is a big problem because any type of drug will
alter the person's mind causing them to act out
in crazy ways. The mission does not need
people that are high on crystal meth or any
other drug because this can lead to other issues
for example, fighting or even death. For
example, in The Los Angeles Times, a security
guard attacks and rapes a homeless woman
after taking a couple of hits off his crack pipe.
Drugs are a big problem for the mission and the
safety of the people; therefore, some changes
need to be made and we as a team have come
up with a few solutions to solve the problem.
There are many issues in Los Angeles
one of them is the high rate of homeless. With a
mass amount of people on the streets that do
not have proper sanitation cause a health risk to
themselves and to the public of Los Angeles.
Uncivilized people who live on the street are
aware of how trashing up the streets can lead to
hazardous health risk. Waste that is dumped
into the streets such as urine, feces, and
temporary utensils rot in the sun and produce
hazardous chemicals which can affect anyone
with chemical poisoning. Plastic utensils are
common temporary items that are usually used
once then it goes into the trash. Non-profit
organizations that bring food for the homeless
use inexpensive plastic utensils to use to eat 4
the meal. The toxic chemicals that plastic
releases are "copper, lead, chromium, cobalt,
selenium, and cadmium" (Health Impacts of

the meal. The toxic chemicals that plastic releases are "copper, lead, chromium, cobalt, selenium, and cadmium"
(Health Impacts of Solid Waste). Plastic is only one of the common waste that end up in the streets and it expose
many hazardous chemicals. Poor sanitation can pile up thousands of chemical which can harm and degrade Los
Angeles. Sanitation is an enhancement to anything, for example selling a used car. Since a used car means that car
been through time and developed a past, you have to try to make the car look as new as you can possibly make it in
order to gain attraction. Same thing applies to Los Angeles, it has been through some rough times and probably built a
bad reputation; therefore, cleaning up the streets can refine Los Angeles reputation and make it a cleaner
environment. A cleaner environment will attract many businesses, tourist, and locals to experience Los Angeles to the
fullest.
There are approximately 1,000 outdoor habitant, who are described as " services resistant, a controversial term
applied mostly to drug addicts and the mentally ill, who for a variety of reasons refuse to go into a shelter or program
(Streisand). One fundamental problem for those services resistant homeless men who dont seek help is that they
are fine to remain poor and not willing to change. "I don't mind being outside," as one of those street residents, Jack
stated, "I don't want to go to a mission and have people telling me what to do. I'd rather live out here (Streisand).
Supports like food and overnight shelter cannot resolve homeless problem completely, neither do homeless people
get out from the struggle. In addition, mentally disable people and drug addicts, who often cannot stay sober and
create potential risk to the community, need further support like psychological treatment. If the homeless mens
incentive to get help cannot be improved, not matter how much money and donation the mission get, those money
will just like being thrown into an abyss , the whole community will only get worse by increasing number of street
outlier.

education which deprives their sense of judgment. In a sense, that leads them to sleep in their own filth which
can potentially cause health issues that can lead to death. In many cases, children that play around the streets
can be caught up with all this filth, and not realize the risk of catching a disease. We also have to understand
that children are still young, with an immune system that is still developing which puts them in risk. If we want
to resolve such a dilemma, we must find a solution to our problem.
To make Los Angeles a better environment we have to take action in our own hand. With small amount of the
California's budget, there is not enough money to address every solution. Therefore, I propose that we should
get people to volunteer to help clean up the streets. This solution contributes to the environment and the
economy as well. Its free labor and it helps people give back to the community. Non-profit organizations for
homeless should work together and solve homeless related issues more efficiently. Another proposal could be
adding a sanitation feature in many shelter homes rehabilitation program, such as having people that are in the
program to get community services hours by cleaning up the streets. This can allow them to clean up the streets
while learning to clean up their act. Discipline is good because it helps shapes one's virtues. This is a good
compromise because its free and it adds more content in helping homeless people to get back on their feet. A
third solution is to ask people with millions of dollars. For example many celebrities donate mass amount of
money to charities to help the community. Famous action Charlie Sheen donate $50,00 to an organization
- Ipsum

which helps homeless people in Los Angeles (Charlie Sheen Donates to homeless Charity). This is good for the
economy because the country does not have to raise taxes to take from the struggle taxpayers to fund this issue.
Like the weekly street cleaning we have today, we should use the celebrities donations to investing a monthly
sidewalk cleaning of Los Angeles. This will make Los Angeles seem less ghetto and can reduce the many
unknown health risk.
Cleaning up the streets can ultimately make Los Angeles a cleaner environment by asking volunteers to help
clean up the streets, implementing a sanitation feature in rehabilitation programs, and ask wealthy people to
donate to fund these issues. Los Angeles has trash cans about every 25 feet, I see more trash on the streets than
the trashcans Volunteering and adding the sanitation community service is one of the best proposals because it
does not require financial funding. Asking a celebrity to fund a sanitation service is also a very good compromise
because it does not hurt the economy and it
helps refine the Los Angeles making it look like a
cleaner place. A cleaner environment can't help
attract more business and tourists to help build
the community and economy. Cleaning up the
streets will ultimately make Los Angeles a well respected landmark.

Self-esteem Building and Motivation

By: Yinghong Lin

It is normal that homeless

people have low self-esteem
(Saade 432), and temporary
homeless people are reported to
have higher self-esteem than
continuing homeless people (437).
In other words, it is reasonable to
say that bad living environment
diminishes dignity, which causes
bad behaviors that make life
worse. Then, homeless people
concluded that people don't stop
being homeless until they find selfesteem and dignity since they do
not realize the problems and dont
have the desire to change (People
Dont Stop Being Homeless Till
They Find Self-Esteem). As a
result, many organizations offer
programs and workshops that can
increase and enhance the selfrespect of homeless people rather

than merely provide shelter and

food, which can only relieve
homeless men temporarily. By the
same token, our intention through
our plan is to help homeless people
gain self-confidence and find their
value. Benefiting from getting higher
self-perception, we expect our
programmers to withdraw from the
cycle of low self-esteem and a down
and out life.
First of all, a good living
condition is the foundation of
establishing self-esteem. One factor
of a decreasing self-esteem is the
insecure feeling because of unstable
sources of getting minimum life
necessaries like food and shelter
(Saade 432-433). This statement can
be said factual by applying the
Maslows hierarchy of needs

Simply speaking, there are five

needs, such as physiological,
safety and self-actualization that
needed to be fulfilled to
motivate a person. Basic needs
like food and property must be
met prior to needs like esteem,
respect and confidence
(Maslows hierarchy of needs).
Hence, establishment of selfrespect requires a secure life as a
precedent condition. Our plan
offers homeless people who used
to live and sleep on the street a
steady place to stay and regular
meals. Thus, our programmers
should be able to gain some sort
of self-respect since they do not
live in uncertainty any more.
One requirement for
homeless men to have free
housing and food is to attend
certain amount of workshops,
and that is a way to open the
gate of building self-esteem to
homeless people. According to
Edward Matthew, a staff in the
Midnight Mission, there already
many programs to help homeless
people exist in the Midnight
Mission, but one dilemma
mission encounters is that many
homeless people dont have the
incentive to ask for counseling.

In addition, many homeless men who live on

the street are mentally disable patients, and
it is hard to get them involved in the existing
programs. Because of that, our plan only sets
few easy tasks and presences of workshops
as the conditions in exchange for shelter and
meals. Our purpose of doing so is to
motivate and attract homeless men who are
not interested in recovery programs in the
past to participate. As soon as they find their
way to get into the programs, we can link
them to a specific workshop, consultant or
psychologist to shape their self-perception.
One clause of the contract is that the
contractor must help clean the street and
distribute the meal in a regular basis. That
clause is designed not only for economic
purpose saving money, but also for building
their dignity while they are serving the
community. A document about homeless in
Skid Row indicates that in the process of
cleaning the street and arranging other
homeless peoples assets, homeless people
enlarged their self-confidence because of
making contribution and devoting
themselves (Rowe 200). The reason is that
they feel they are being needed when they
are helping others, and that sense of acting
as a useful person is an essential part of selfrespect. Likewise, our contractors will be
able to develop self-confidence and good
identity when they are actually doing
contribution to the program by serving meals
to others and cleaning the street for the
community.
Lastly, the dormitory and family
room in our plan are intended to reinforce
the self-perception to a new level. Based on
our plan, the contractors are assigned to a
room of four people. Similar to a boarding
school, our contractors can get friends and
get along with their roommates. One
desirable outcome of the room is that when
each of the roommates attend workshops or
seek help to improve their self-awareness,

They can then make progress at the same time by influencing each
others self-esteem. The reason is that people are affected by the
surrounding and those whom they are accompanied with. From the
same approach, homeless parents and their kids will get the same
progress. It is no doubt that parents can affect the entire life of their
kids; thus, homeless children have a hard time to escape the same fate
if their parents have low self-esteem. Homeless parents tend to
express frustration over their splintered view of the parenting
process even though they dont mean to do that (Swick). That leads
to an outcome that loss of confidence and self-esteem in
parentsgreatly influences their (young kids) experience in becoming
homeless (Swick). In order to rescue and help the next generation of
homeless, we plan to improve the self-awareness of homeless parents
first; then those parents should have the ability to shape the selfperception of their kids later.
To conclude, many programs cannot reach homeless people,
for homeless men lack the motivation because of low esteem that
makes them feel uncomfortable to embrace and accept change, so it is
difficult to make those people to make the first step to seek help.
Thus, our plan is designed to improve the self-esteem of homeless
people who lose dignity because of insecure life and their
surroundings by attracting them by food and shelter first. Later, being
a part of the community through devoting themselves and influence of
roommates with same goals or parents who receive support will
reinforce self-esteem. Once we get those homeless men to participate
in the programs and help them gain basic self-esteem, they can move
to the next level, which is KymaKeep Your Mind Alive, a life coaching
program.

A Holistic Approach (future long term

planning)
By Luis Lemus
The homeless problem in the city of Los Angeles has yet
to disappear. It is why I suggest the implementation of
KYMA (Keep Your Mind Active) program at the Midnight
Mission shelter. The program will focus its attention on
homeless individuals and their future long term plans.
Because the motives and background of the people that
become homeless varies, KYMA will provide special
attention to the drug addicts and single mothers who
have been rejected by their families due to their past
mistakes.
To begin, the drug addicts who wish to
participate in this program either he or she will be
required to attend two weekly drug use counseling
sessions. The participants of this part of the program
then will be introduced to various hobbies and activities
like chess, cooking, painting and cooking. Ive planned
to approach this part of the program in this manner
because I believe routines become habits which
eventually turn into a lifestyle. For this tactic to fully
function the assistance of certified life coaches, will be
on site to assist these individuals learn new skills while
they help them make productive and effective future
plans.

On the other hand, the single mothers who

families but have a problem communicating with
them will be assisted by women psychologists
and women physical therapists. Ive planned to
approach this part of the program as a womanto-woman social interaction because as a man I
cannot relate to a mother. But I truly believe
that when it comes to personal life problems,
the women that find themselves in a homeless
circumstance would feel more comfortable
communicating with their own gender. The
women will be offered a chance to express
themselves and have a friend they feel
comfortable speaking to. In return, the female
participants of this part of the program will be
offered arranged job interviews to help them
overcome fears and build character.
The third part of this program provides
help for armed forces veterans. Due to the high
amount of men that become traumatized from
witnessing mass death and destruction, I plan to
approach the homeless veterans with full force.
Since many suffer from PTSD, (Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder) psychologists, therapists,
mentors, motivational speakers and
psychiatrists will be on site. By granting
veterans, suffering from mental and physical
problems The Midnight Mission will have
reduced its skid row transients, ultimately
minimizing the number of homeless wandering
the streets of the city of Los Angeles. As a long
term solution, as they gradually recover
veterans will be offered arranged job interviews
and the chance to obtain accreditations in
technical skills such as plumbing, mechanic and
electricians.
Overall these proposed solutions to the
different types of homeless individuals
wandering the streets will give the Midnight
Mission a more welcoming and positive look,
which will change peoples lives for the good.

14

Although KYMA will focus on the long term future planning of these men and women, I intent to enforce
and apply a holistic approach. The reason for this is because the homeless and transient issue in the city of Los
Angeles cannot be resolved in isolation. Factors like moral support, physical and psychological trauma; social and
economic circumstances have to be taken into consideration. Overall this program will allow these men and women
to occupy their mind with the purpose to keep them busy and gradually minimize the bad choices they make.
It is imperative this program has the necessary funds to make the required changes in these peoples lives.
Therefore in conjunction with the Midnight Missions Family Housing program KYMA will have most of its financial
contributions from Goodwill which is a non-profit organization.

to the loss of jobs and homes. Over the past years
nevertheless, the city around the Mission has gone
through many changes that have affected all the
people and the Midnight Mission itself. Over the
past several years, poverty has increased causing
a tremendous growth in the amount of people
whom need the services of these places such as
the Midnight Mission shelter. Because the flooding
of the Midnight Mission has also gotten large with
many transients, the city of Los Angeles finds itself
struggling to provide the additional services
homeless people require. The mission has done a
great job in helping people in need; however, some
issues have been overlooked. The mission needs
to pay attention to the people that inhabit the
streets around and try to find different solutions to
attend to their needs. With the plans that we have
created, we believe the homeless will get a second
chance of life. Our plans will attend to the
homeless and give them hope once again. The
community will gain from the changes as well
because the streets around the mission will be
