Note: Answer all questions.
1. Sketch the waveform for the output voltage V0 for the figure shown below. Assume, V =
0.3V for the given germanium diode which has a forward current of 28 mA at 1V and ac
resistance of 25.
2. Explain the phenomenon of avalanche and Zener breakdown in diodes and compare them.
Using ideal Zener diode approximations, find the current through the diode when the load
resistance RL is a) 30k and b) 3k.
3. A half wave rectifier circuit is fed by 240V, 50Hz ac at the primary of a transformer having
turns ratio of 20:1, and has a load of 1k. Calculate the values of dc output voltage and
current.
4. What do you mean by line and load regulations? Explain. For a voltage regulator using
Zener diode with breakdown voltage of 10V, maximum Zener power of 30mW, series
resistance of 1000 and load resistance of 1200 is employed. Determine the output
voltage Vo, voltage drop across series resistance, Zener current Iz and Pz.
5. A Zener diode regulates at 50V over range of diode current from 5 to 40mA. The input
voltage Vi = 200V. Calculate the series resistance Rs to allow voltage regulation from a
load current IL= 0 to ILmax,. If the load current is fixed at 25mA, what are the range of Vi
that is permitted without loss of regulation in the circuit. Draw the circuit.
9. Draw the output the circuit shown in Fig below, assuming an input of sinusoidal signal as
shown in the waveform.
10. A full-wave rectifier with two diodes has a load resistance of 1000 . The ac input
voltage applied to the diode is 200-0-200 Volts with a frequency of 50Hz. Assuming
ideal diodes, Calculate a) Average load current, b) Average load current
c) Ripple
voltage d) The PIV ratings of the diodes e) The new value of ripple voltage if a
capacitor of 500F is connected across the load.
