Notes 5 - Waveguides Part 2 Parallel Plate

This document provides information about parallel plate waveguides and the transverse electromagnetic (TEM) and transverse magnetic (TMz) modes that can propagate within them. Key points include: - The TEM mode in a parallel plate waveguide behaves as a transmission line with a characteristic impedance determined by the geometry and materials. - Higher order TMz modes exist where the transverse magnetic field is nonzero and has a sinusoidal variation between the plates. These modes can propagate or be evanescent depending on frequency. - Cutoff frequencies exist for each TMz mode above which it transitions from evanescent to propagating. The TEM mode corresponds to the lowest TMz mode for n=0.
