Dear Parents,
I am pleased with the progress that your child is making. Everyone has been working hard this
quarter. We are learning many new things. As you receive the progress report for the first time, I
would like to explain some of the items you will see.
Standards-based grades are not the same as traditional A, B, C, D, and Fs. Percentages are not
used to average grades. Students do assignments to prove they understand concepts. If they
learn the concepts, they receive a passing grade. Even if they do not understand right away, they
can still pass if they understand it later. This allows students the time they need to learn.
Grade meanings are explained at the top of the page. A grade of 3 means the child has
mastered the content this quarter. They are doing well and should be praised. A 4 shows work
beyond what is expected. Students must show a thorough knowledge and be able to apply it in
unique ways. A 2 shows that a student has mastered some of the skills, but has not learned
others. This child should be encouraged to keep trying. A 1 shows great difficulty in learning.
Pay close attention to the learner qualities. These grades are indicators as to how hard your child
is working. Doing well shows they are doing everything they can to learn and get along with
others.
On some subject areas, you will find an X. This shows we have not studied this area during the
quarter. We will cover it later.
If your child is in special education, you will notice that the box on the back of the report card
Evaluation based on Individual Education Plan has been checked. This means that the child
was graded on the level that his/her education plan requires.
Please take special note of the comments. This is where I let you know your childs strengths
and weaknesses. Remember to be positive when talking about the progress report. It is
important for children to feel good about their progress.
Thank you again for your support. Please call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
