Introduction
Believing that public schools make a contribution to our democracy here in the
United States, Don Kauchak, one of the authentic authors of Learning and Teaching:
Research-Based Methods (2011), 6th Edition, has not only published and co-authored
an abundance of scholarly journals, but is currently working in the field as an educator
for multiple grade levels. It is imperative that educators learn from other educators that
are experienced in a multitude of areas within the classroom and abroad. When creating
lesson plans we must keep in mind that the educational system is a constant revolving
spectrum like a galaxy or a spinning wheel. We all evolve yet end up back where we
started eventually. As leaders in the public school system we need to be aware of these
changes and adapt the quality of accommodation and preparation. Throughout this
review I will be comparing and connecting chapters one, two, and three to the TExES
Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 competencies 001, 002, 005, and
006.
Learning to Teach
There are different stages in a childs development. There are also different ways
to explain these development processes and changes. Dr. Jean Piaget in competency
001 theorizes that, when children confront new or puzzling experiences, they must re-

Classroom Management
Classroom management is one of the most important factors in teaching and is
one of the areas that challenge teachers the most (Competency 006). Classroom
Environment is the ability to organize and plan the day in a way that is efficient to all
students. A Community of Learners is learning environments wherein everyone in the
group is learning together and from one another in a supportive manner; in a classroom,
this means that all children, as well as the teacher, learn together (Comp 005). Creating
an efficient learning environment for the students means that you have to plan and
prepare in order for things to run smoothly.
Although there are eight factors of effective classroom management, the one that
I want to discuss is, understanding how to deal with serious behavioral problems. I
believe this is a task that is most difficult because no matter how old you are some
personalities do not mesh well together. Judgement is reality and as leaders we need to
keep our position and stay focused on the solution and goal which is to help and
motivate the students to learn and succeed. In Learning and Teaching, chapter threes
purpose is to emphasis the teachers responsibility to create a productive learning
environment for the students. Intervention may be required to handle children that are
having a hard time with the idea of school in general. On page 92 we see that there are
steps that we can take in order to prevent inappropriate behavior from taking over our
classroom.
Conclusion
Throughout chapters one, two, and three in Learning to Teach, we learned the
definition of a good teacher and what effective teaching means in the classroom.

Competency 001 relates to chapter one in that, learners will teach themselves by
direction and guidance. Teachers will benefit by letting students be creative and interact
with each other. This modern concept is called constructivism. Competency 002 relates
to chapter two in that, teachers will be surrounded by a very diverse classroom and
learning how to manage all types of learners is important. Competency 006 and 005
relates to chapter three in that classroom environment effects not only your ability to
manage your classroom, but that your classroom management can and will also affect
your students behavior in a positive and negative way. With accommodation and
preparation in mind we can keep up with the changes involved in our education system
to keep students learning and actively engaged.
