Competition and contests are part and parcel of our lives.

We have sports and games, where we try to determine who
are the best, in every kind of sports and games.
Individuals, Parishes, States and countries vie with one
another in doing things better than others. Wars too are
part of the competitive innate nature of man. However
wisdom teaches us not to compete, but contribute as well
as we can for the common good of all.
Although competition is healthy, if we examine carefully,
many times it leads us to rivalry and even foul play. In the
case of the children of Adam and Eve, Cain killed his
brother Abel, since he was very upset by the fact that God
accepted Abels gift, whereas his offering was not
acceptable to God.
Christ came to lay down his life, not to compete with
anybody. Christ was not proud, he was meek and humble.
In the Gospel today, we see the sons of Zebedee, James and
John seeking to sit on the right and left hand side of Jesus.
Jesus not only scolds them, but emphasizes the need for
humility and service.
Our First Reading explains how through service and
suffering, we become pleasing to God. In the Second
Reading we are reminded that Jesus Christ, suffered like
every one of us. Therefore His Priesthood and the exercise
of His Ministry were not just privileges but true service,
based on His human experience. He humbled Himself. He
served God and man. We need to understand our suffering
and pains as part of our humble service to God and one

ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. HFCA FALL FESTIVAL/FAIR
The Annual HFCA Fall festival will be held on the School
Grounds on Friday November 6, from 5-9 PM. Each year
the Parish sponsors a Dessert Booth and helps with an
allotment of Raffle tickets. Sign-up Sheets are available
this week-end and the next. Please be generous and please
note that most of the proceedings will be given back to
our Parish.
SAINT LUKE
Feast Day October 18
Saint Luke wrote one of the major portions

of the New Testament, a two-volume work
comprising the third Gospel and Acts of
the Apostles. In the two books he shows
the parallel between the life of Christ and
that of the Church. He is the only Gentile
Christian among the Gospel writers
Tradition holds him to be a native of
Antioch, an ancient Greek city. Saint Paul
called him "our beloved physician"
Prayer of the Order of Saint Luke
Almighty God, who inspired Your servant
Luke the Physician to set forth in the Gospel
the love and healing power of Your Son:
Graciously continue in Your Church the love
and power to heal, to the praise and glory of
Your Name, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

2. A NEW PIANO
We have bought a New Piano at the total cost of $5830.00.
The cost has been equally divided between the Parish and
the HFCA. We are sure our Piano players will be happy
and may the Lord encourage us to sing and praise the
Lord more enthusiastically.
3. MASSES FOR THE DEAD.
Please and envelopes for you to write the names of your
Beloved departed and make donations to the Parish. All
the Masses in November will be offered for the repose of
the souls of the Dead. As is our custom, Fr Sebastian will
offer the Mass each day and pray for those whose names
are written on the envelopes.
4. OCTOBER: THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY
Please join the Parish as we recite together the Rosary 20
minutes before each Mass on the Week-ends. Families
that pray together, stay together. Father Peyton.
5. RUMMAGE SALE
The Performing Arts Group had a Rummage Sale on
Saturday October 17 at the Academy Grounds to raise
funds for their trip to the Disneyworld in April.
6. GIVE ALOHA/FOODLAND FUND RAISER
Through the cooperation of the Parents of the Academy
we raised more than 100K. We scored the second highest
in sales. We thank all the parents for their participation in
this event. Thank you.
Newcomers are encouraged to register with the parish

To be great in the
kingdom
of
God
means to be a servant, says Jesus: We
are to serve the needs
of others for the benefit of the kingdom.
This does not mean
that our own needs
and
desires
and
dreams don't matter. Being a
servant for God is not slavery; it's an honor and a
blessing, because it unites
us to the saving servanthood
of Christ.
Being a servant like Christ
means that we are treated by
the Father the same way Jesus was treated. Our Master
will not belittle us, disrespect
us, nor over-work us.
The alternative is to be a
slave to our worldly passions
and possessions and the
ways of the world. Worldly
enslavement does belittle us.
It reduces us to less than
what God created us to be.
The ways of Christ empower

us to be like Christ himself: free to enjoy all of the
benefits of the kingdom of God, free to live a holy life,
and therefore, free to be great in the eyes of our Father.
In this freedom, there is great joy. Although the ways
of Christ are not easy and sometimes lead to the
Cross, this cup of suffering increases our holiness and
makes us even greater in heaven. When we make
sacrifices for the benefit of others and we understand
that our sufferings are part of our growth in holiness,
they become much more bearable,

because what had seemed like a
curse is redeemed into
a very significant blessing.
Do you know anyone
whose prayers have
not been answered?
It's not because God
doesn't care, nor because he can't help
them. He answers the
prayers of others through our servanthood. Jesus serves others
through us.
Our top priority must always be our
own relationship with God, so that
we receive an abundance of whatever he wants us to share with others in service to their needs. We
cannot give what we don't have. We
cannot serve others well we cannot be the presence of Christ for
them unless we ourselves have
first been served by Jesus.
Reflect & Discuss:

1. What has God blessed you with
abundantly? What insights, gifts,
talents, wisdom, etc., do you
have?
2. How are these indications that
Jesus has served you?
3. Share how you have passed this
service onto someone else (or
would like to). For example, how
has he served you with his unconditional, forgiving love? Or
how has he served you by meeting an unmet need? In turn, how
has this helped you to be a loving servant for others?

after his sabbatical in India.
Praying the Rosary for America on October 12

Holy Family Catholic Youth/Confirmation Group, during their First Retreat. Congratulations
Today is WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. This day was promulgated by Pope Pius XII in
1926, 89 years ago. The Church is missionary in character. Jesus commanded His
disciples to Go and Preach the Good News. October is the month of the Rosary, as well
as the month we pray for the Missions, especially the missionaries engaged in direct
missionary activities. Pope Francis, in his very first World Mission Sunday homily,
challenged
all Catholics to proclaim courageously the Gospel of Christ. We are
encouraged to speak and discuss about Christ and His Good News whenever we can.
Imagine the change in the minds and hearts of people, if we ourselves tried to live the
Gospel of Christ and preached the Good News with our lives!
