(PGP PEM)

Today Engineering Project Management is a welldefined business area. Engineering excellence in the
field of Infrastructure, Industrial, Financial and Service
sector, requires vital skills and knowledge of Project
Engineering and Management principles. Many new
projects have been launched in the last five years in
the field of Infrastructure, Power, Telecommunication,
Oil & Gas and Information Technology. Many more
projects are coming in the near future.

The electives offered in the programme allow engineers

from different disciplines to select special engineering &
management subjects to enhance their subject
expertise in tune with careers of their choice.

Completing the engineering project in a competitive

environment needs specialized manpower. Project
Engineers and Managers are required in large
numbers. They should be well versed in principles of
Project Management and System Engineering with
multidisciplinary approach.

GOALS

The industries like Steel, Oil & gas, Petrochemical,

Power etc. need these professionals for their Projects.
The Project management professionals are opted by
EPC organizations and even the Engineering
consultants to complete the projects effectively. The
professionals have equal opportunity in all Engineering
organizations.

The graduate engineers who are trained in specialized

area such as mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical,
petrochemical Engineering and never get focused on
multidisciplinary demands of modern projects and
remain inadequate in their understanding of areas
other than their own subject knowledge.

pursue Project Management education and

of completed projects, or those under execution
and to share that learning with Project
Management fraternity.

THE PROGRAMME
This programme of studies builds upon the concepts
and practices of Project Engineering and Management
and combines subject knowledge with project practices.

Project Management organization has to train

engineers and managers by directly exposing them to
Ongoing Project as on-the-Job training. This training
is inadequate without understanding the fundamentals
of Project Engineering and Management principles.
They practice various aspects of Project Engineering &
Management, but leave a lot of gap in their
understanding.

The first year introduces various general management

subjects to improve students understanding of key
aspects in business management. This unfolds the
basic phenomenon and relationships that characterise
the changing world in which management practitioner
must operate. At the same time, Project related
subjects are blended to link the theoretical studies to
practical issues in Project Management.

The Project Engineering and Management course

provides the solution to fresh engineers and
experienced Engineering Professionals as a new
career. The Project Engineering and Management is
unique course and hardly any institute of repute offers
similar course in India.

During the second year, specialised areas of project

management are introduced to develop indepth
knowledge of project management. This knowledge
enhancement process is supplemented by exposure to
elective subjects in the areas of Oil and Gas, Process
Industry, Building Services, Piping Engineering, Power
Plant Engineering, Telecom and many other areas.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of the programme is to train young and
dynamic graduate engineers to develop them into
mature and knowledgeable professional project
managers with the potential to manage large projects in
any field in India or abroad, to shoulder responsibility in
any functional capacity with some of the essential
competencies, such as
Sound knowledge of theory and practice of
project management.

Practical experience is also gained by students through

study tours and summer training. Project based thesis
work under the supervision of internal and external
experts develop skills in scientific analysis of problems
and report writing. Computer application skills and
knowledge of quantitative methods creates an
analytical edge for managerial decision making
expected in the complex project management world.

The students are trained on various softwares required

for Project Management and Analysis.

Candidate's preference of a campus as well as

programme will be considered but the allotment will be
done at the sole discretion of the Admission
Department. Candidates should attend the given dates
for undergoing the selection procedure. They have to
make their own travel and living arrangements during
selection process.

DURATION AND ORGANISATION

The programme duration is two years. It is organised
into 7 trimesters with each trimester of approximately
13 weeks duration with suitable breaks. Each trimester
has a mix of course subjects and practical workshops.
In addition, the students are required to undergo a
summer training for a period of 8 -10 weeks with the
industry to gain field experience. Students sponsored
by their employers and those from abroad, can opt for
summer training with their respective organizations /
countries. The last three trimesters also offer many
specialised elective subjects and project work.

ADMISSION UNDER SPONSORED CATEGORY

The institute has the policy of admitting a limited
number of students under sponsored category, not
exceeding 5 % of the total students admitted.
Candidates to be considered for admission under
sponsored category must fulfill the following
requirements:

ELIGIBILITY

1. Satisfy all the eligibility criteria for admission to the

respective two-year full time Post Graduate
Programmes of the institute as announced in the
admission advertisement.

Bachelors degree in any branch of Engineering from a

recognised Indian university with at least 50 percent
marks in qualifying exams.

2. Must have appeared for the admission process of

the institute including Written Test, Group
Discussion and Personal Interview.

Preference will be given to the candidates having

previous work experience or those sponsored by their
employers.

On selection should be willing to pay tuition fee,

which will be 50% higher than the regular tuition fee
for the respective programme.

assistance both for summer as well as final
placement.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE
Selection of students is done by the Selection
Committee. Admissions work is handled centrally at
Pune. Those interested in admission to the programme
have to submit applications on the prescribed forms to
the Head Admissions, NICMAR Pune, along with the
required documents within the specified date. All
enclosures must be submitted. Incomplete applications
will not be considered.
All applications for admission are scrutinized and
eligibility established on the basis of documents
submitted.
All eligible candidates are invited to undergo the
selection procedure, which comprises the following:

The common pool Merit List is drawn on the basis of
performance in written test / score, GD, PI and Rating
of Applications (RA), i.e., 50 marks. All competing
candidates appear in the Merit List in the order of their
respective merit. Admission letters are issued in the
serial order of the Merit List.

5. Produce an undertaking, duly signed by the

sponsoring individual / organization as provided in
Part III of the application form.
TUITION FEES AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE
The details of total amount of tuition fee payable for this
course over two years are given below. The security
deposit is refundable on successful completion of the
programme.
The tuition fee includes admission fee, term registration
fee and other charges: i.e., fees for computer
workshop, construction practice workshop and
managerial skills workshop, examination, evaluation,
thesis work & assessment, contributions to library &
student's welfare fund, subscription to NICMAR
Journal, etc. The institute gives a free group accident
insurance and group mediclaim cover to all students for
a period of 2 years from the date of admission.

In such cases the institute shall refund the fees
@50% of the first installment. No refund of fees will
be admissible for any cancellation beyond this limit.
All documentary proofs, duly certified by competent
authority should be enclosed. In case the student
applies for the above after a period of 7 days of
commencement of programme, the Institute shall
refund the Security Deposit of Rs. 3,000 only.

The following conditions apply to payment of fees and

other dues.
i. Fees once paid are non-refundable and nontransferable.
ii. Fees are payable by Demand Draft drawn in favour
of 'NICMAR SOPEM' and payable at Pune.
Cheques and cash would not be accepted.
iii. The fees and other dues payable at the time of
admission would be mentioned in Admission Letter.
iv. The Fees are payable as per the schedule given,
otherwise there will be Late fee as follows:
Rs.100 for first seven days and thereafter
Rs. 150 per day of delay.
Hostel and mess fees are additional.
v. The above fee includes a cost of 2 NICMAR T
Shirts, one tie and one student bag.
vi. Sponsored candidates will be required to pay 50%
higher tuition fee compared to the merit students
admitted to course.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The Institute offers merit scholarships, which are
granted on the basis of academic performance of the
candidate in each academic trimester.
The Institute assists students who seek study loans
from banks.
Companies that accept students for summer training
invariably offer allowances / stipends during training
period.

These schemes are framed to institute, operate and
disburse scholarships for students of various two year
full time Post Graduate Programmes offered by
NICMAR.

programmes or cancellation after they have been
selected for a particular programme.

Students may apply for the change of programme

from a full time two years programme to another full
time two years programme.
The application of request for transfer is to be made
one week before the commencement of classes.
Students have to pay Rs. 5000 along with transfer
application towards transfer processing fee.
All transfer request applications will be considered
by the Admissions Department for final decision on
transfer depending on the actual admissions in the
concerned courses, eligibility criteria, admission cutoff / or merit in the concerned programme. Decision
taken by the Admissions Department to transfer the
candidate or reject the transfer application will be
final and binding.
Only one transfer request is permissible.

Rules
i. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the
Trimester Performance Index (TPI) of the concerned
Trimester.
ii. In case of any tie amongst candidates on same TPI,
merit will be determined by Cumulative Performance
Index (CPI). In case of tie again in CPI, maximum
nos. of AA or AB will be taken. After that if once
again there is a tie, then the scholarship amount will
be spilt evenly amongst the concerned candidates.
iii. Award of scholarship will be decided after
declaration of each Term End Examination.
iv. The scholarship will be paid after declaration of the
same.

3. Policy for Cancellation of Admission and Refund

of Fees
-

The institute has a policy of considering refund of

full first installment of tuition fee paid by the student
at the time of acceptance of offer of admission. All
such requests must be necessarily received by the
Head Admissions under any circumstances not later
than the date of commencement of classes of the
first trimester of programme i.e. 11-07-2011.

The awardees of the scholarship may be assigned

academic work of such nature and duration as may be
decided by the Heads / Deans of the concerned
programme, keeping in mind the overall need to keep
such assigned work to minimum level possible.
NICMARS EXCALIBUR AWARD

Under extenuating circumstances (like accident of

self, long term illness, death / serious illness of the

students securing the highest rank among all students
of ACM (Pune, Hyderabad & Goa campuses), PEM,
REUIM and IFDM programmes. The award is
presented trimester wise and waives full tuition fee and
hostel fee for the trimester in which the student has
secured the highest rank.

HOSTEL AND LIVING EXPENSES

Hostel accommodation is available at Pune, Goa and
Hyderabad
campuses.
Girl
students
granted
admissions are housed separately.
Pune campus has four hostels, which together provide
400 single occupancy and 80 shared occupancy for
students of postgraduate programmes at Pune.
Hyderabad campus has two hostels which provide 65
shared occupancy rooms. Goa campus hostel has
capacity for 120 students on sharing basis.
Attempt is made that all girl students who need hostel
are given accommodation. For boy students, the
accommodation is offered in the order of the merit list
for admission prepared by the Selection Committee. All
students have to abide rigorously by a code of conduct
issued by the institute.
The schedule of payment of NICMAR hostel fees is as

Merit holders for award of Scholarships and

Excalibur Award should meet the following
conditions. Breach of any one of the conditions
shall make them liable to be disqualified for award
of scholarship.
i. The Awardee's attendance in any course of study
shall not be less than 80 percent.
ii. The Awardee shall have no adverse comments /
grading on record from any teacher for any reason
whatsoever.
iii. Any act of indiscipline shall make the Awardee liable
to forfeiture of the Award.
iv. The decision of the Scholarship Committee shall be
final and binding on all parties concerned.
v. The Awardees shall maintain high standards in all
conduct and behaviour and conform to the discipline
of the Institute.
vi. The decision of the Dean of the concerned School
in regard to the forfeiture / suspension of the Award
in pursuance of conditions stated at (i) to (iii) above
shall be final. In case of any grievances, student
may apply to the Director General. Such cases will
be finalised by the Academic Council. No appeal will
be allowed on the decision of the Academic Council.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
SCHORLARSHIP:

INSTITUTES

The institute Mess facilities are run by the contractor

hired by NICMAR under the supervision of the
Manager, Premises and Services (P&S). The manager
according to the suggestion of Students Co-ordinator
prepares menu.

(PMI)

Mess charges are approximately Rs. 125 per day for all
the meals and snacks.

Hostel and mess fees is payable together for the entire

term within 7 days of the commencement of the term.
In case of any delay, a late fine of Rs. 75/- per day will
be payable for the first 7 days, after which fine will be
Rs.125/- per day. The hostel and mess fees once paid
are non- refundable or non- transferable. Mess facility
is mandatory for all students staying in NICMAR
Hostels within campus and outside campus.

Year of Establishment: July, 2010.

Objective: To recognize exceptional merit of NICMAR
students studying in Full Time Programmes of the
Institute, in the area of Project Management.
Frequency of Disbursement: Once every academic
year, awarded on commencement of the new academic
year. The scholarship is currently available to be
awarded for five successive years.
Nature: A cash award of Rs. 100,000/- for the topranking student and Rs. 25,000/- for the runner up, of
PGP ACM / PEM / REUIM programmes, in project
management subjects.
Eligibility: Awarded to the student, studying in any of
NICMARs two year Full Time Academic Programmes,
securing the highest merit in project management
subjects in the first 3 trimesters, across all centres of
NICMAR.
Description of Award: In recognition of a students
academic excellence and commendable achievement

Typically, the total living expenses including hostel,

mess and other at Pune campus are approx Rs.7,500
per month.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
i. Course Work
The Course Curriculum to be studied is divided in 7
trimesters. In each trimester there are 6 subjects of
full credit (7 Credits) and two workshop practices to
get hands on training. The trimester-wise distribution
of courses and workshops is indicated in table 1.
Typically, a full course of 7 credits involves
26 hours of teaching in 20 sessions and about 90
hours of self-study by a student. There would also
be individual assignments, group presentations and
class tests in addition, as decided by the teacher.

vi.Summer Training

ii. Computer Workshops

A project manager should be proficient in computer
application relating to all aspects of his / her work.
He / She should be coversant with the basic office
packages and database systems, and the
engineering design packages. He / She should also
be able to use project management software
packages for project planning, scheduling,
monitoring and control. Also other packages for
drawing, estimating, financial accounting, statistical
and quantitative methods and Enterprise Resource
Planning, Softwares for generating project
information for a variety of purposes. He / she
should be comfortable with Internet and multi-media
systems. Every student spends 6 hours per week in
the Computer Centre for hands-on learning the use
and application of all aforesaid packages under
expert faculty guidance. Students can also spend
many more hours in computer centre to practice and
work on assignments. Skilful and creative application
of tools and techniques of information technology
and use of computers in the practice of his / her
profession is the unique skill of a NICMAR graduate.
iii.Business
Communication
Development Workshops

&

As part of the curriculum, each student has to

undergo a supervised field training with a reputed
project construction / consulting firm for 10 -12
weeks period. During this period they have to learn
the project management practices followed at project
site including planning, execution, progress
assessment, site management, reporting etc. The
training being on the job, the student is also
expected to perform certain regular duties on the
project as may be felt fit by the respective
organization.
Organizations for practical training are carefully
selected from among the reputed firms. The host
organization is expected to nominate a senior officer
to supervise the students work, be willing to pay a
stipend to the student and hopefully may offer
employment to the student trained by it. Essentially,
the Institute looks for meaningful and supervised
work experience for the student.
Sponsored
students may be allowed to do training in their own
organisations. Students are expected to assist the
institute in arranging their Summer Training.

Personality

vii. Project Work

Project Manager is a nodal point and link between

higher management, project team, clients,
contractors and external agencies. He has to
effectively communicate at all levels and possess
leadership qualities. The workshops therefore intend
to develop written & oral communication & audio
visual presentation skills, Listening skills, Conflict
Management, interpersonal & Social skills; Skills in
dealing with selected work groups such as clients,
contractors, construction workers, government
officials, trade unionists and Skills in understanding
the socio-political state of projects and groups.

Project work is one of the qualifying of requirements

during the first year. The student selects a topic of
study having relevance to the current economic /
industrial / project scenario and are expected to write
a Report on the basis of information and data
collected through different sources. Although any
field work is not expected for such papers, in-depth
understanding of the basic issues involved and
academic style presentation are evaluated. The
evaluation is by the Institutes faculty.
viii. Project Thesis
The Project Thesis is an independent qualifying
requirement and also carries weightage in the final
evaluation. Students should select a topic for project
work on a live problem in the industry or a macroissue having a bearing on performance of the
industry. The topic should be researchable in the
given time and should be approved by the Institute.
It should involve scientific design of a study,
collection and analysis of data and preparing a
thesis in report format.
The students are allotted a research guide by the
Institute. If the student elects to have a guide from
outside, the Institute will nominate one of the faculty
members as a internal guide. Students are permitted
to take up group projects wherever found suitable
and approved by the Institute. Evaluation is done by
external examiners.

iv. Project Engineering Workshops

Project Engineering Workshop is an important part
of the curriculum. It gives hands-on experience in
the following skills required of a project engineer.
- Construction Skills
- Fabrication Skills
- Plant & Equipment Erection Skills
- Plant & Equipment installation Skills
- Electrical & Instrumentation installation
Students will be spending about 6 hours per week
working with their own hands to get a feel of different
practices in construction, erection & commissioning
of process plants under supervision & guidance of
expert trainers & site engineers. Students must
equip themselves with safety helmets, boots and
goggles at their own cost. They also have to
organise for the transportation to the project sites.
v. Site Visits

ASSESSMENT

The Institute organises site visits to various project

construction and infrastructure development sites of
professional interest of a selected centre.
Attendance on these tours / visits is compulsory.
The students are encouraged to take initiative in
organising these tours. Students pay for their
expenses on the tours.

Assessment of students performance is done as per

Guidelines of Academic Administration available in a
printed booklet on request.
The NICMAR learning system balances classroom
learning and practical work in overall assessment.
Classroom learning comprises 77 percent of total

half-an-hour presentation in the class on a

selected and relevant topic.
The faculty concerned announces the results of
internal assessment in the class so that the students
are aware of their performance. The answer books
of mid-Term tests are also returned to a student so
that one can verify and convince oneself of the
correctness of the assessment done by the faculty.
The essay assignment is also returned to the
student after correction and evaluation
by the
faculty. This enables the student to be aware of
ones performance on an on-going basis.
In case the performance is below standard, the
student can request the teacher for a Make up Test
and if his marks in the Make-up test are more, they
will replace the earlier marks to improve the overall
grade.

iv. Joint Assessment

Students Project work is subject to Joint
Assessment by the Project Guide and an External
Expert appointed for the purpose. The internship is
also assessed jointly by the Company Supervisor of
the student and the Faculty Supervisor, both
nominated prior to the start of Summer training.

Thirty percent of the assessment of course work and

all practical workshops are Subject to Concurrent
Internal

Final

Examinations are held for remaining 70 percent
assessment of course work.
Project Work and Internship are assessed jointly by
Project guide and external experts. The relative

v. Failure Cases
NICMARs Post Graduate Programmes are high
profile programmes to which students of a high
calibre are admitted through a process of rigorous
evaluation of their competence. It is, therefore,
expected that no student will fail in any subject or
will delay submission of Thesis without valid
reasons.
However, if any student fails to obtain minimum
passing marks in any subject, his overall result is
withheld. Such a student will have to take
examination by paying re-exams fees of Rs.1200/per subject along with the next trimester and obtain
the minimum passing marks so as to enable him to
qualify for the course.
Similarly, non-submission of Thesis on time is
viewed with displeasure. A candidate is not
considered to have passed the programme unless
he submits the Thesis and is adjudged as
satisfactory and given the rating by the Examiner
appointed for the purpose.
If the students wish to get their examination paper/s
re-evaluated then this can be done by payment of
re-evaluation fees of Rs. 800 per paper.

ii. Examinations
The Term-end examinations is of 70 marks (Each
paper) and will be of 21/2 hours duration. The Termend examination has the following components.
i. Essay type questions.
ii. Structured or short answer questions.
iii. Questions involving computations and derivations.
It is to be noted that the Term-end examination
covers the entire syllabus of the courses taught
during the Term and also any additional information
given by the faculty during the lectures.
iii. Concurrent Internal Assessment
Concurrent Internal Assessment (CIA) is for 30
percent marks out of total for each course.
The Concurrent Internal Assessment is done on a
continuous basis by the respective faculty for the
course concerned. The internal assessment is
based on :
i.
one hour mid-term examination,
ii.
an essay type assignment on a topic assigned
by the course faculty,
iii. the students overall performance in the class, and

vi. Grading System

Evaluation is done on Trimester basis. At the end of
every Trimester, a Trimester Performance Index
(TPI) and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) is
calculated by converting the subject marks to
relative grades as given in table below. The CPI at
the end of any trimester must not fall below 6.0. A

2,62,676 square feet built up area on 11 acre plot of

land, using the latest materials and technologies having
state-of-the-art facilities blend harmoniously with the
landscaped greenery all around. Physical infrastructure
of the Campus include work area for 1000 students, 60
faculty & scholars and 100 support staff (classrooms,
seminar rooms, tutorial rooms, auditorium hall,
amphitheater, faculty cabins, offices, modern library,
stack areas, reference section, documentation centre,
scholars cabins, computerized catalogues, intercampus online library, computer centres for 285
persons each to work at a time, internet and e-mail ID
as www.nicmar.ac.in round the clock, chat rooms, a
guest house, a modern and well appointed kitchen
with capacity to serve 1,000 meals per day, students
and faculty dining halls). Other facilities include Xerox
center, solar heating, waste recycling plant, doctor,
medical inspection room, first-aid kits, indoor and
outdoor recreation infrastructure, i.e., foot ball ground,
basket ball court, tennis court, badminton court (2),
volley ball court (2), gymnasium, recreation hall with
table tennis, carom boards, chess boards and T.V. with
dish connection, stationery and supplies store, laundry.

Students who are assessed to have met all the
academic requirements successfully are eligible to
receive their PGP Certificates.
In order to quality for the Award, the student should
meet qualify the following requirements :
i. Minimum prescribed attendance of 80 percent in
each course.
ii. Minimum prescribed grades in each course.
iii. Satisfactory completion of all practical workshops.
iv. Satisfactory completion of Summer Training.

DISCIPLINE AND CODE OF CONDUCT

Students shall be courteous and formal in conduct with
faculty, and staff at all times. Also they are expected to
extend courtesies to all the management, faculty,
administrative and support staff failing which an
appropriate disciplinary action shall be taken against
the erring student. A code of conduct for the students is
issued at the time of admission. Students are expected
to follow it.

NICMAR Pune campus maintains well-equipped

and modern computer centre. Computer centre has
sufficient number of computers of the latest
technology (core 2 Duo) with leading construction
business related application packages like Microsoft
Project Management, Primavera (P6), Candy for
Project Management and BRIX for contract
management and SPSS, QE Pro for Data Analysis
& Estimation and leading ERP packages like
Microsoft Dynamics. An advanced digital Language
Lab is available for students to get proficiency in
English. Internet and e-mail facilities are available at
all locations. Qualified and experienced staff heads
the Computer Centres and the centres are open
from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M.

PLACEMENT/JOBS
As mentioned earlier, NICMAR is the best platform for
students to get into reputed companies and hold
responsible positions. NICMAR has near 100 percent
placement record and all graduating students found
good jobs before leaving the campus.

iii. Library

Campus interviews are held at all campuses. Reputed

companies are invited to visit campuses and select
their future managers. The fact that NICMAR is a
construction industry sponsored institution is a great
advantage in students placement and employment.

NICMAR Pune campus has a large library. This is a

specialized library in construction and project
management. It holds a collection of over 15,509
titles, 150 NICMAR registered cases, 78 periodicals
(print) and 8 online resources at Pune alone. Library
subscribes to all major technical and professional
journals relevant to the mainline work of the
Institute.
The library provides text book services to students
and research / reference support to faculty and
scholars and useful information to construction
enterprises. It is fully computerized and staffed by
professionally qualified.

The Institute takes no responsibility of finding jobs for

students.
PUNE CAMPUS
NICMAR Pune Campus is situated at Balewadi, 14
kms. away from the Pune Central Railway Station and
seven kms. from Pune University and the Expressway
to Bangalore runs along the Institute. It has over

- Well-equipped facilities exist for indoor games,

watching T.V., listening to music and for general
reading.
- At Pune, the international sports stadium is just
across the road from campus and students can
access swimming pools, gymnasia, field tracks
and other facilities.
- The students participate in the socio-cultural
activities in the city and inter-collegiate
competitions.
- Students also bring out in-house magazines,
newsletters and similar publications.
- All students at NICMAR shall mandatory serve in
either one of the community program related to
the

Facilities to access information on NICMAR and its
activities and programmes on Internet and e-mail
are available at all campuses. 5 Mbps WiFi and 2
Mbps lease lines are available for internet access at
NICMAR Pune Campus.
